Billy Riley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brooks & White Funeral Home and Crematory - Roxboro on Mar. 20, 2026.
Billy Gray "Bird" Riley, a cherished soul known for his boundless generosity and devout Christian faith, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, in his hometown of Roxboro, NC, the very place that had the privilege of witnessing his first breath on November 12, 1936. Born to the late Lonnie Thomas Riley and Vallie Beatrice Day Riley, Billy's life was a testament to the values of love, hard work, and steadfast faith that were instilled in him from a young age. Billy was a proud graduate of Bethel Hill High School, after which he furthered his education at Piedmont Technical Institute, now known as Piedmont Community College.

His commitment to his country was evident through his service in the Navy for four years, an experience that shaped much of his character and instilled in him a sense of discipline and duty. After his honorable discharge, Billy dedicated many years to Collins & Aikman, where he worked in quality control until the plant's closure. His work was not just a job but a reflection of his meticulous nature and his constant pursuit of excellence.

Billy's love for his family knew no bounds. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Shelby Brann Riley, for 47 years until her passing on February 18, 2011. He was a loving father to his daughter Wanda J. Riley, who survives him and continues to carry forward his legacy of kindness and sister Bertha Ann McCullough. He was also predeceased by his siblings Elizabeth Riley Beaver, Rosa Mae Riley, Jessie Lee Riley, Virginia Riley Rimmer, and Melvin Thomas Riley.

As a devout Christian and member of Timberlake Baptist Church Billy lived his life as a testament to his faith. His commitment to his church and his unwavering belief in the grace of God were sources of comfort and strength throughout his life.

Billy's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He found joy in the simplicity of mowing grass, planting his garden, and lending a helping hand wherever he could. His generosity extended beyond his family and friends as he often volunteered his time and resources to those in need, embodying the Christian principle of loving one's neighbor.

Memorial service with military rites will be held at Timberlake Baptist Church Timberlake, NC, April 11, 2026 at 11am by Dr. M. David Chambers and Rev. Dennis McDonald. Visitation 10am-11am.

Flowers are acceptable or donation in his memory to Timberlake Baptist Church Building Fund or Rock Grove Baptist Church Building Fund.

Billy's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, yet his spirit lives on through the many lives he touched with his kindness and compassion. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose, and guided by an unwavering faith in the Lord. As we bid farewell to Billy Gray "Bird" Riley, we do so with the comfort of knowing that he has found eternal peace and rest in the arms of his Savior. His memory will be forever treasured, and his legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who had the pleasure of walking alongside him on his earthly journey.
