Mr. Billy Vernon Smith, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, at the age of 84 in Andrews, Texas. Born on March 4, 1941, in Guntersville, Alabama, Billy's life was a testament to the joy of family, the beauty of nature, and the strength of community bonds.
Billy is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Pam Smith Bates, and her husband, Ronnie, of Merkel, Texas, his granddaughter, Karen Bates Lee, and her husband, Johnathan Lee, also of Merkel, Texas. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Mckenna, Bailey, Braston, and Maddox. He leaves behind his sisters, Lee McCoy of New York, Vera Burroughs of Oklahoma, and Peggy Stamp of Tennessee. His life was enriched by the company of his special friends Alan, Angela, Aimee, and Asa, and his brother-in-law, Gary Guy. His departure has left a void in the hearts of numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members who will miss him dearly.
Billy is joyfully reunited in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Patricia A. Smith, special friend Dora Ruth, granddaughter Mackenzie Utley, his parents Bert and Birdie Smith, his brothers Wayne Smith and Buddy Smith, his sisters Alice Howard and Pat Guy.
A man of great patience and fun-loving spirit, Billy taught not only his daughter, Pam, but also many of her friends the joys of water skiing and driving. His gentle guidance and encouragement left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of learning from him.
Billy and his wife, Patricia, were united in marriage on May 4, 1963, and together they shared thirty years of love and companionship until her passing in 1993. Their home was a hub of warmth and hospitality, often filled with laughter and the happy chatter of guests. The couple cherished their time at the lake, indulged in occasional gambling adventures, and were renowned for their gracious hosting of gatherings that are fondly remembered by all who attended.
An avid outdoorsman, Billy relished the time he spent fishing and hunting, embracing the tranquility and excitement that nature offered. His love for outdoor activities was matched by his passion for bringing people together over food. He was famous for his fish fries and barbecues, events that became much-anticipated traditions among family and friends. A man of many talents, Billy even welded his own barbecue grills in his shop, a place where he spent countless hours creating and tinkering.
Billy's shop was not just a space for welding and woodwork; it was a sanctuary where stories were shared, friendships were forged, and memories were made. Those who knew him will remember his infectious laughter, his generous spirit, and his unwavering dedication to his loved ones.
Mr. Billy Vernon Smith's life was a beautiful journey of love, laughter, and service to others. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit lives on through the lives he touched and the natural world he so deeply appreciated.
Graveside services for Mr. Billy Vernon Smith will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Andrews West Cemetery with Reverend Leslie Boone officiating. Mr. Smith will be available for viewing on Friday, April 11, 2025, at McNett Funeral Home from nine until four o'clock in the afternoon.
