Obituary for Bing Kwan Lui
Bing Kwan Lui was the son of Lui Ga Dean and Lee Heung Nui. He was born on January 17, 1931, in the village of On Sing village-Huang Mao Tian, located within Si Jiu town in Tai Shan city in China. At an early age, he was educated in accounting and an accomplished Chinese calligrapher.
At 18, he married the love of his life, Sue Hing Lee in Toishan China and they were blessed with their first son John. At the age of 21 he went to Hong Kong to help create a better life with more opportunities for his wife and son. In Hong Kong he became property manager for a company in Kowloon, managing properties in the Nathan Road and surrounding areas. Once he was established, in 1962 his wife and son were able to join him in Hong Kong. After arriving in Hong Kong, Bing and Sue's family grew. God blessed them with three more children (Judy, Jack, and Jim).
In 1972 Bing and his family were able to immigrate to the United States. This great opportunity was made possible through his older sister Fay and her husband George Lew as they were the ones to sponsor Bing and his family, and provide him with a job at their restaurant, Golden City in Tacoma. Working at the restaurant allowed him to learn restaurant skills. During this time his wife Sue was working as a seamstress in Seattle and had to reside in Seattle on the days she worked. While Bing worked long hours at Golden City, he also raised his children, cooking impressive and creative meals for his children before going off to work and overseeing their daily homework.
Bing, Sue, and their eldest son John were enthusiastic and determined to become sole proprietors – to achieve their American dream of opening their own restaurant. In 1980, through their shared diligence and economizing they opened their own restaurant, Chinatown in Olympia. Under the tutelage of son John, Bing's Chinese culinary skills and passion grew and was shared with his wife and other two sons. Together, they developed signature dishes that gained great recognition in the community and many longtime loyal patrons and staff. During Thanksgiving, he would host a family meal but always included friends, patrons, or those in need to share a meal with the family.
Bing was a strong support of his family and his community. With the growth of the family restaurant, Bing was able to sponsor numerous events and projects here in Olympia and Seattle, as well as in his childhood village in China. Bing lived a life of compassion and benevolence towards others. He helped sponsor many projects in the Soo Yuen Association in Seattle. Bing was a man of honor and loyalty, never forgetting his friends and family in Toishan China where he was raised. He made several memorable trips home to visit with friends and family, and to provide support to the community. Just a few examples of his kindness and compassion were helping in the fundings for both the building of schools and improvement of the roads, provide funds to families in need, etc. On one of his trips, he knew of a family that needed transportation, so he bought them a motorcycle.
His favorite passion was fishing! In the 90's he invested and stocked a fishing pond in his childhood village in China. He enjoyed fishing in this pond and then sharing his bounty with those in need. When he was home in Olympia, he loved to go fishing in his boat in the peninsula waters and accompanied by his sons and grandson.
In 2016, Bing made an eternal change in his life! His son John witness to him and Bing accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. This same year he was water baptized. All his children and grandchildren were with him during this great celebration of his new dedication to serve and follow Jesus. Praise the Lord!
This last October, his son John helped him fulfill is last wish – to make one last visit to China. He took him back for his visit, and son Jim was able to join them for a portion of that visit.
Bing passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023. He is now enjoying his eternal life in heaven! He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather! He will be remembered most for his honor, kindness, generosity, and loving nature. He touched so many lives! He is loved and will be greatly missed more than words can describe.
Bing is survived by his children and their spouses: John (Sandy) Lui, Jack (Dawn) Lui, Jim (Hong) Lui, and niece/daughter Oy Ping; his grandchildren Alex (Tristin), Jennifer (Jacob), Aaron, Shannon (Dennis), Kalyn (Michael), Zachary (Shanii), Joshua, Rebeka (Craig), Kit, Jeremy, Sonja (Jonathan), Selina (Jason), Jeffery; and his great grandchildren Alexia, Bella, Zander, Ethan, Tilly, Sterling, Pierce, Jewel, Heaven, Khai, Harrington, Emerson, Brody, and Khari. His sister Fay Lew; several nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended family members.
Bing is preceded in death by his parents, Lui Ga Dean and Lee Heung Nui; by his wife Sue, daughter Judy Kelley, and son-in-law Richard Kelley.
A Funeral Service is scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11:00 am in the Haven of Rest Chapel. A reception following the service will be held at 2:30 pm at Harvest Buffet at 3121 S 38th St, Tacoma, WA 98409. For any inquiries, please contact the restaurant at (253) 472-3888.
