Brett A. Mathew, 56, of Lafayette, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
He was born November 6, 1968, in Lafayette, and graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School and Barber School. Brett started working at Dog-n-Suds as a teenager. He then moved into a career as a barber, working at Mathew's Style Center alongside his family, and was the current owner of Mathew's Barber Shop downtown. He played both baseball and basketball in his youth. As an adult, he loved helping coach little league baseball alongside his friends. Brett enjoyed his sports, especially Notre Dame and 49ers football. The NCAA tournament was something he looked forward to every March and comparing busted brackets with clients. Brett knew statistics and facts regarding teams and players. You could rarely, if ever win an argument with him on that topic. You could get an occasional late-night phone call, because he loved reminiscing about the best neighborhood to grow up in, sharing the shenanigans he and his friends would get into. Brett didn't know a stranger, and that quality blessed him with many friends and helped him to grow his business behind the chair. Grief is tremendous, but love is bigger, we grieve because we love. There truly aren't any words to convey this incredible void we all feel in a world without Brett in it.
Surviving is his mother, Cheryl, stepfather (Will Cadwallader) Mathew, and father, Larry (significant other Marge Bunting) Mathew and a sister, Melissa Whitus all of Lafayette, and a niece, Mylee Whitus. Aunts, Julie (Dave) Windhorst, and Kathy Stearns. Uncles, Ed (Jody) Mathew, Mike (Glenna) Cole. Cousins, Tye (Tiffany) Campbell, Courtney (Burt) Thornton, Talia (Dave) Cobb, Jake (Richai) Mathew, Maggie (Cody) Milestone, Jennifer (Paul) Cvar, and Mike (Kendal) Cole ll. Brett was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Patricia Cole, and Ed and Marge Mathew. As well as two Uncles, Ted Cole and Don Stearns.
Brett remained very close to his ex-wife Jennifer (Bob) Delong, and his ex-brother-in-law Brian (Stacy) Whitus, and still considered them family. He also leaves behind many loyal and loving friends and clients.
A gathering/visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909. The family requests that you do not form a line. Please just come in to gather, share stories amongst friends and family and celebrate Brett's life.

To Larry and all of Brett´s family, my sincerest
Condolences for your loss and grief at this time. Brett and Larry I always looked forward to seeing each time I needed a haircut. Now that I have moved away from Lafayette to Rio Rancho, N.M nearly four years ago. Each time I get a haircut here, I think of them with fond memories. R.I.P. Brett...you will be missed by all of us who ever needed a happy haircut at Mathew´s Barber Shop.

Prayers for the family. My husband and I loved him. Such a sweet young man. Brett would come to our home and nursing home to cut Don s hair.

Brett was our neighbor. We always knew what was happening around here because of him. Seems right that there would be so much mystery surrounding what happened with him. My sons grew up playing in and around his yard. He was really good with them, and they were devastated to learn of his passing. Brett was a good friend with a big heart. He will be dearly missed. Our condolences to his family.

There are so many memories of Brett. Always was a good looking guy with a great personality. My son grew up with him and was always at the house. He was In Scott wedding party and was a big tease. I haven´t seen him in years but he alway knew he was welcome here. May God bless him and prayers, love and hugs to the family. May he rest in peace
