Brian Madden Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, Inc. - New Rochelle on Jul. 19, 2023.
Brian J. Madden, the former executive vice president of one of the largest substance abuse programs in the country, died on July 16, 2023, at Calvary Hospital. He was 75.
The cause of death according to his caregiver and sister, Kate Falvey, was prostate cancer.
Brian became interested in the plight of the drug addicted at a time when substance abuse treatment was largely confined to imprisonment. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Regis College, he obtained a Masters of Science degree in social work at Fordham University. He then was awarded a PhD in Gerontology from Columbia University.
In 1970, he was recruited by Monsignor William O' Brien, the founder of Daytop Village, a nonsectarian, not-for-profit residential treatment facility for drug addicts. Together they worked tirelessly to deliver support and care to the afflicted by establishing programs that succeeded in achieving unprecedented cure rates and allowed former residents to become productive members of society. During their stay, the residents were encouraged to participate in the CARES program founded by Brian, which aided the frail and infirm with meals and assistance. The success of the initial facility in Manhattan resulted in the creation of eight additional residential facilities throughout the state and two more in New Jersey providing residential care for 800 individuals and 1,200 outpatients. Government representatives from Europe, South America and Asia expressed interest in the Daytop model.
Brian, the Director of Daytop International, responded by designing treatment programs tailored to the needs of the host countries. Pope John Paul II was so enamored with the program, he donated part of the papal summer residence, Castel Gandolfo, as the location for a Daytop residence.
Brian was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Manhattan where he attended Saint David's school followed by high school years spent at Portsmouth Priory in Rhode Island. He's predeceased by his parents, John L. Madden, M.D. and Bertha Madden.
Brian is survived by five siblings and two daughters, Tara and Courtney.
In lieu of flowers donations to Calvary Hospital in Brian's name would be appreciated.
