Brian E. O'Flaherty passed away on Saturday December 3rd with his family by his side.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Karin, his four children Kristin (Robert), Kerry (Joe), Tara and Tim and his four grandchildren, Tessa, Theo, Emmy and Natalie.
Brian was born and raised in Queens. After graduating from Martin Van Buren High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on submarines. After the navy he earned an associate degree, and then followed in the footsteps of his father by joining the New York City Fire Department.
Brian was a decorated member of the NYFD. He began his career in Brooklyn, where he worked at Ladder 105, and later as a Lieutenant at Ladder 102. He then moved to Manhattan, where he spent 12 years as the Captain of Rescue 1, later working as a Captain's Representative for the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, and then as a Battalion Chief in the 9th Battalion in midtown, before finishing his career as Chief of Safety. He retired after 38 years of service following injuries sustained on 9/11.
Brian met Karin at the beach in South Hampton. Their shared love of the sun and the water inspired them to move to Long Island to raise their family. Longtime residents of Rockville Centre, they moved to Long Beach to enjoy retirement. Brian participated in many sports during his lifetimes and was a great skier, an avid sailor, and a dedicated golfer. He also traveled widely, including many motorcycle tours, golfing trips and visits to see friends and loved ones. He especially loved spending time with the grandkids on their visits to "Pop's Beach".
The O'Flaherty family would like to thank Brian's FDNY family, his golf pals, friends and neighbors for their enduring friendship and support, as well the staff at the Good Shepard Hospice at Mercy Hospital for their care during his final days.
Visitation will be held at Macken's Funeral home on Thursday December 8th from 2-4pm. and from 7-9 pm. A funeral mass is scheduled at St Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Center on Friday December 9th at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made in Brian's memory to:

Brian worked with my Dad, Jack, at Ladder 105 and were promoted to Lieutenant together. Knowing and working with Brian for anyone who, even if only worked one tour with him, left a lasting impression on all of us. He mentored many young firefighters in his time, who walked in his long shadow throughout his great career in his beloved FDNY, RIP Brian, God be with you.
