A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 25th at 11am at St. Matthew Catholic in the Chapel with Celebrant, Father Nicholas Kramer. Inurnment to follow in the church columbarium with Navy honors.
Bruce was born in Coral Gables Florida in 1947, to Bruce and Nellie Fox. The family moved frequently during his young life, including a move to East Haven, CT when Bruce met Patricia Freitag in their 7 th grade year. Bruce's family moved away from East Haven, but Patty and Bruce were reunited during high school when his family returned to live in North Haven, CT. Bruce married Patty in August of 1966 and shortly after that he joined the Navy at age 19 as a submariner. Bruce spent 4 years in the Navy alternating 3 months on duty on a submarine with 3 months at home with Patty in Mystic, CT. During his months home on leave, he worked at a garage doing autobody repair.
After his active military service, Bruce attended the University of Connecticut, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. His first job after college was with Dupont in Virginia. Patty and Bruce moved around the mid-west and eastern parts of the US for Bruce's career, meeting new people and making friends in each place. Bruce became an expert in explosives and ultimately rose to VP of Operations for the Southeast US for Explosives Technologies International, a Dyno Nobel company, furthering his career and his impact. Bruce joined the International Society of Engineers, which is an organization that strives to improve the safety, science, skill and benefits of explosives engineering worldwide. Bruce retired from another explosives company, Austin Powder, where he was the Manager of Operations for their southeastern division. The proximity of Austin Powder to the Charlotte area gave Bruce and Patty the opportunity to put down deep roots in nearby Waxhaw, NC. As the first residents of the Walden Pond subdivision, Bruce and Patty welcomed many other new arrivals (often with brownies and valuable local information) and Bruce volunteered on the Walden Pond HOA Board of Directors and on the Architectural Review Committee for several of the nearly 30 years they resided in Waxhaw. Bruce was an avid golfer, loved to travel by land and water, enjoyed playing pinochle and other games with friends, was an avid UCONN Huskies women's basketball fan, and spent many happy years tending to the lawn and garden of their Walden Pond home. He was a gentle, kind and softspoken man who was a wonderful husband to Patty and a great brother, uncle, friend and neighbor to many.
Bruce leaves behind his wife Patty, his sisters Stephanie Thomson (Thomas) and Beverly Smith (Gary), his sister-in-law Lorraine Montessi (David DeRosa), his nieces and nephews Kimberly Burckhardt (Ryan), Thomas Thomson Jr. (Christy), Angela Rivera (Eric), Douglas Smith (Margaret) and Shana Lipp, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, Brandon, Colin, Cailey, Chloe, Lauren, Jake, Lucas, Aiden, Caleb, Hershel and Jayde.
