Burton Slininger, age 95, of
Twin Valley, MN, died Monday, May 6, 2024, at Halstad Living Center, Halstad, MN.
Burton Elmer Slininger was born on January 26, 1929, the son of Charles and Fanny (Hornby) Slininger, in Lake Ida Township, MN, where he spent most of his life. He was baptized in June 1943 at First Lutheran Church, rural Ada, and confirmed in June 1945 at Zion Lutheran Church in
Twin Valley, MN. Burton's early years were devoted to helping his father on the family farm in Lake Ida Township after attending Bloomfield County School until the age of 14. Throughout his life, he held various jobs, from agriculture to construction, working for companies such as Stanley Habedank Construction, Olaf Anderson, Great Plains, EID Company, and Ron Guttormson. On June 17, 1950, he married Laurena Warnsholz at St. John's Lutheran parsonage. After initially residing in Twin Valley and briefly in Omaha, NE, they settled back in Twin Valley and Ada communities to pursue farming. In 1966, they bought their own farm, where they established their forever home.
In the early 1970s, Burton expanded his farming endeavors by adding a dairy operation, which kept him busy milking cows until his retirement in the early 2000s. He enjoyed farming alongside his son until his retirement.
Farming was Burton's life, but when he wasn't milking cows or working the fields, he kept busy with his garden, growing family favorites like pumpkins and squash, mowing his lawn, and deer hunting. He cherished time spent with his family, particularly assisting his children with their 4-H projects. Known for his skills at fixing and tinkering with anything, Burton always carried his trusty pliers in his pocket wherever he went. Burton was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and as an elder for several years, as well as in Evangelism with the clergy and other members of the church.
Burton is survived by his daughters: Diane Peterson, Joyce (Wayne Bakke) Zak, and Judy Fugleberg; daughter-in-law, Lynelle Slininger; seven grandchildren: Randy (Chastity) Peterson, Bradley (Laura) Slininger, Kristin (Eric Schmidt) Wendt, Charles (Natalie) Slininger, Sarah (Michael) Johnson, Nicholas (Beth) Zak, and Heidi (Caleb Zuniga) Zak; 16 great-grandchildren: Matthew, Emma, Lennon, Christopher, Jack, Amanda, Kelsey, Addison, Ryan, JoLynn, Alex, Brooklyn, Sienna, Sutton, Scotlyn, and Signe; one great-great-grandchild, Avery; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family. Burton was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laurena; his son, Donald Slininger; grandsons: Mitchell Slininger, Scott Zak, Philip Zak, and Monte Zak; great-grandson, Carter Peterson; and all of his siblings.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 10, 2024, at 2:00pm, with a visitation one hour before, at St John's Lutheran Church in Green Meadow Township, rural Ada, MN. Interment will be at St John's Cemetery rural Ada, MN.
