Burton Weiland

Burton Weiland (91) passed away January 12, 2025 after a long illness. He left us memories and laughs that will last a lifetime.
Burt worked different jobs after which he was a union carpenter for 24 years, retiring at age 60. He could do almost anything, but liked working with wood best.
Skiing was an activity that Burt enthusiastically embraced until he broke his leg, was in a cast for 6 months, and subsequently needed two ankle surgeries and a knee replacement. However, his real passion was boating, including fixing up old boats, using them, then selling them for some profit. Burt was a long-time friend of Bill Mayer at Mayer's Marina on Irondequoit Bay. Bill gave him old boats and a slip, and Burt did carpentry jobs for Bill.
Burt leaves behind his daughters, Lisa O'Neill and Yvonne Phillips; grandchildren; and other relatives; as well as Robin Folts, who became a daughter to him. Robin, an elder care attorney, deserves great praise for aiding in the management of Burt's care as well as financial obligations. Burt also leaves his partner of over 20 years, Joan Thatcher, with whom he forged a wonderful life, both in Rochester and as snowbirds in Florida. Joan's family became family to Burt.
Playing the card game euchre was special to Burt, so he was excited to teach Joan how to play. They played in various places and developed friendships both in Rochester and Boynton Beach, Florida. Besides boating and euchre, Burt and Joan also enjoyed dancing, camping, horseshoes, riding along Lake Rd. to Sodus Bay and points east. In addition, while in Florida they enjoyed 3/4 golf, the pool and hot tub, driving along the coast, taking the water taxi and bike-riding in Hollywood.
Eventually, Burt's illness prevented him from using his carpentry skills and participating in the activities he enjoyed so much. Special thanks go to the Friendly Home for the wonderful care and support he received there, including during his last days.
We will miss Burt. He is at peace.
