August 19, 2025. Born in Brooklyn on August 27, 1945, Theodora A. Jankowski earned her PhD in English Literature at Syracuse University as a specialist in Renaissance/Shakespeare studies, taught at Montclair State University, and later at Penn State University where she was both Professor and Provost. In addition to inspiring many students who years later wrote to thank her for her encouragement and academic challenge, she authored three books. The first two were on various aspects of Shakespeare. The third, written after she lost her sight, is considered the definitive volume on John Lilly, precursor to Shakespeare-a text that has been downloaded more than 900 times by students and scholars from Egypt to Japan and many places in-between.

Theodora is survived by her wife of 24 years, the Reverend Dr. Leona Irsch; siblings Pauline, Jeannie, and Stephen, and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Episcopal Church Home Chapel (505 Mt Hope Ave) on Wednesday August 27 at 11 a.m. Green burial will be at White Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Theodora can be made to the St. Joseph Indian School, 1301 North Main St., Chamberlain, SD 57325.
