Our loving father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on January 30, 2025. While we are devastated at his sudden departure, we are comforted knowing he is now reunited with his loving wife, Jean and daughter Laurie.
Reed, as most people knew him, was born on June 12, 1938, to Clain Spencer and Hilda (Hill) Spencer in Tremonton, Utah. He grew up in Garland, Utah and spent his time helping out on farms near and around that area. He attended Bear River High and played on the football team there. He would later graduate from there, but not before he met the love of his life Jean (Andrews). She was 14 when they met. Shortly after they started dating, Reed told his parents he "met the girl he was going to marry...He just needed to wait for her to grow up". On April 3,1959 just before Jean graduated, he would marry her at her parents' house before leaving for boot camp in the Utah National Guard. They were later sealed on December 17, 1961, in the Logan Temple
After his Utah National Guard boot camp, he returned to Logan where he and Jean made their first home and where they welcomed their first child Terry in March of 1960. Reed spent his time helping out on different farms, and honing his carpentry and woodworking skills, skills he learned in high school and came to love. They later moved to
Ogden, Utah where their second son Michael was born in June of 1962. They welcomed their only daughter Laurie in March of 1966. The family later moved to Washington Terrace and lived there during the time their kids were growing up.
Reed continued to develop his home building skills while working for several local home builders. He loved building homes and was very good at. In 1968 he established his own successful construction company. He often took his two sons to the job site where they helped out and learned how to build houses, but more than that they learned through Reed's example an excellent work ethic, the meaning of hard work, and a dedication to family and friends. All traits that carried into their adulthood helping them obtain higher educational goals, successful careers and loving families of their own. He was so very proud of his boys and their achievements
.
Upon retirement in 2009, he enjoyed traveling, camping, and cruising with Jean, her parents, and his own siblings. One of their special times together was doing fondue nights. The group of them always had such a great time and really enjoyed their time together. He also enjoyed spending a lot of his summer camping at their canyon property at Evergreen Estates near Causey Reservoir, where he welcomed friends and family alike to come up and enjoy. His adventures with Jean would take them to Hawaii, Mexico, Panama, the Caribbean, and Alaska. They loved hitting the road in their RV and riding the trails in their side-by-side or spending their winters in Arizona.
In January of 2014 Reed and Jean stepped up to help raise their Grandson, Christopher and Granddaughter, Megan after their daughter Laurie passed away. One of his greatest joys was his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved spending time with them. He loved them all so very much. He was always there to offer a helping hand, an ear to listen, a shoulder of support and of course always a story to tell you. He loved sharing stories from his childhood, his adventures or about his family ancestors. He loved doing research on his genealogy and loved sharing his legacy with us. He was a devoted Dad, and Grandpa to all of us.
The absolute greatest joy in his life was spending time with Jean. They were hardly apart, and in their 65 years of marriage through thick and thin their love never wavered. They are truly devoted to each other and were a wonderful example to all their family. They really took care of each other. They were always holding hands and always missed each other when they were apart. These past 6 months without her were hard and he missed her so much. We are happy that they are now reunited to start out on new adventures together.
Reed is survived by his sons, Terry (Sharon) Spencer, Michael (Laura) Spencer, his brothers, Lynn Spencer, DeVerl Spencer, sisters Diane (Sam) Hess and Jane Horn, Brother-in-law, Craig (Mardyne) Andrews, 9 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, wife Jean, daughter Laurie, sisters-in-laws Linda (Lynn) Spencer, Martsie (DeVerl) Spencer, and brother-in-law Larry (Jane) Horn, and nephew Chad Spencer.
