Calvin Boyd Obituary
Calvin Leroy Boyd, Sr., age 74, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024, in Newport News, Virginia. Born on May 20, 1950, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Calvin lived a life full of dedication to his family, his community, and his work.
A graduate of P.W. Moore High School in 1968, Calvin began his career working in carpentry, loss prevention and security before embarking on a distinguished career with Newport News Shipbuilding that spanned over four decades. He began his journey at the shipyard on August 20, 1973, as a trainee with X11 Shipfitters and quickly advanced through the ranks. His hard work and leadership led him to positions of increasing responsibility, culminating in his role as Manager of Office Services (O14) before retiring in March 2016. Calvin was a proud member of the Shipyard Apprenticeship Alumni, and he graduated from the apprentice school as a Fitter in 1977.

Beyond his professional achievements, Calvin had many passions, including being an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan and spending cherished moments with his family and friends. His skill in carpentry extended beyond his work at the shipyard, as he enjoyed home improvement tasks and helping anyone in need.
Calvin's faith was a cornerstone of his life. For 30 years, he served as a Deacon at Colossian Baptist Church, Living Waters Christian Fellowship and Restoration Christian Church. He also took great joy in coaching his son Calvin Jr's recreation league baseball team for five years.
He is preceded in death by his father Artis Lee Boyd, Jr., mother Lethia Elma Banks Boyd, stepmother Alma Marie "Rebop" Hunt and sister Mary Morris (Wayne). He leaves behind a loving family who will hold his memory dear: his wife Alverta Skinner Boyd; son Calvin Leroy "CJ" Boyd, Jr. (Deidra); siblings Johnny Boyd, Sr. (Deborah), Lethia Elma Baum (West), Jacqueline Marie Ingram, William "Bill" Boyd (Mary), Ricky Boyd (Margaret), Artis Boyd, III (Phyllis), Frederick "Duke" Boyd (Shirley, deceased), Tony Boyd (Esther), Lee Boyd (Vansola), Denise Boyd, and Shawndell Boyd; grandchildren Marqell Boyd (Dy'mone), Saniyah Boyd and Malcolm Boyd; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Calvin's life on Friday, November 22, 2024, at Restoration Christian Church, located at 606 Denbigh Blvd., Newport News, VA 23608. The viewing will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. A repass will be held at 1 p.m. at the American Legion, 368 American Legion Dr., Newport News, VA 23608.
Calvin Leroy Boyd, Sr.'s legacy of kindness, strength, leadership, and commitment will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege to know and love him.
