Calvin Ralph Harris

April 5, 1947–August 16, 2021

Calvin Ralph Harris was born on April 5, 1947 to Ralph Arthur Harris and Naomi Barker. Cal spent his childhood growing up on a cattle ranch outside of Evanston, Wyoming, with his parents and two older sisters, Theda Marie and Shonna Ann. He loved spending time working on the ranch and trying not to get bucked off bulls, horses, sheep, and the milk cow (the milk cow usually won). He attended Evanston High School where he excelled in his studies and as a wrestler. Due to his wrestling success, Cal was offered a scholarship to wrestle for Brigham Young University. But due to a major injury during his senior season at Evanston, he was never able to take the mat for BYU.

He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 1966 to 1968 in upstate New York (the Cumorah, New York mission). Upon returning from his mission, he completed his studies at BYU and earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in history. After graduating from BYU, Cal became a high school teacher at Layton High School and taught courses at the University of Utah while seeking to obtain a doctorate degree, but Cal spent most of his career teaching A.P. American History at Bountiful High School. He loved teaching and was beloved by his students and created many lifelong friends during his career.

The most important event in his life happened while enrolled at BYU when Cal met Linda Kay Crosby. Although Linda grew up riding in convertibles and going to the beach in southern California, while Cal grew up riding horses and using out-houses in southern Wyoming, it was a match made in heaven. Cal and Linda were sealed in the Los Angeles, California temple in 1972. They settled in Kaysville, Utah where they have lived for the past 45 years. Cal was dedicated to his family and his faith. He spent countless hours serving his family and his neighbors. He had the much sought after but rarely acquired ability to effect positive change for good in the people who he interacted with. He genuinely loved people.

Cal passed away on August 16, 2021 from COVID-19 complications.

Cal is survived by his wife Linda, his children Matt (Mindy), Kirk (Erin), Lauryn (Robert Murdock), Jeffrey (Maranda), his 12 grandchildren, and his sister Theda Marie (Fred Ochoa).
