Cantor Kowitz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hodroff-Epstein Memorial Chapel - St. Paul on Dec. 17, 2025.
Cantor Mitchell David Kowitz

Cantor Mitchell David Kowitz was received into the arms of his beloved Adonai on November 23, 2025. Cantor Mitch leaves behind a legacy that will live on forever.

He possessed a rich Baritone voice that few if any could match. He performed in several musicals on Broadway. In addition to his extraordinary vocal talent, he was a highly skilled guitarist, composer, teacher, writer and Kosher chef and had a published cookbook.

"You took me in when there was no place left to go…", these are lyrics from the song, "To Light up Everyday", that he wrote as a tribute to his wife Denise for coming into his life and was played at their wedding. Many of Cantor Mitch's songs are still being sung at synagogues across the country.

The last four years of his life were extremely happy. He met and married the love of his life, Denise and the couple cherished every moment together. Their Backgammon tournaments were famous!

Cantor Mitch resumed his role of Hazzan and teacher, mentoring several Cantorial students. He spent his leisure time gardening, composing, writing and performing. Cantor Mitch served as adjunct clergy at Sharei Chesed in Minnetonka.

He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Denise; his children: Cantor Joshua (Jaime) Diamond, Dr. Michael Kowitz, Shelly Kowitz; granddaughters, Rose and Nora Diamond; sister, Pat Orban, mother-in-law "Mamaleh" Bonnie Ferguson, sister-in-law, Tracy Ferguson, brother-in-law, Bill (Rachel) Ferguson, nieces, Brianna, Desirae, and Rose Ferguson, nephews, Dr. Michael (Karina) Ferguson, and Thomas and Henry Ferguson, and the couple's rescue dogs: Noah, Lola, Poppasito and Babaleh.

Preceded in death by parents, Irv and Marie Kowitz, father-in-law William Ferguson Sr.

A special thank you to Rabbi's Daniel and Avram Ettedgui and the entire congregation of Sharei Chesed for giving Mitchell and Denise a loving spiritual home. Also, a very special thank you to Mitchell's sponsor, Marv Koski, who loved and supported Mitchell with all of his heart.

Until we meet again my darling Mitchell, you will remain in our hearts and be loved and missed forever.
