Captain James William Bennett, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on September 30, 1936, in Ashland City, TN, James was the son of the late Moss and Minnie Bennett.

James dedicated his career to the waterways as a skilled Towboat Pilot at Wooten River Service. His life was marked by his passion for the river and his unwavering commitment to his family. He never met a stranger, only friends which did not yet hold the title. He always kept his front door open for whoever to feel welcome.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Carmen E. Bennett, his parents, and his sisters, Gladys Dunn and Elizabeth "Liz" Perry.

James's legacy lives on through his loving daughters, Carmen Louise Cruse (Stiles) and Tina Aileen Brown (Larry Sr.), both of Jeffersonville, IN. He is also survived by his sister, Sally Ferguson of Ashland City, TN.

His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren: David Cruse (Amanda), James Cruse (Julie), Christina Brown, Cindy Brown, and Larry Brown Jr. (Stevie). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Brittanie Cruse, Emilie Cruse, Jordan Cruse, Kayleigh Cruse, Lainey Cruse, Bennett Brown, and Carmen Brown.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at E.M. Coots' Sons Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the service.
