Captain Carl J. Albrecht, USN (Ret.) of
Hamilton, New York, age 88, died on July 15th, 2024 in Ashburn, Virginia. Carl fought with every grain of strength he had against Vascular Dementia. He passed away with his wife and daughter's bedside at home. He never gave up the ship until the Lord called him home.
Carl was born the first son to Rita and Robert Albrecht on July 11, 1936 in Utica, New York. Eventually he lived in his beloved house in
Hamilton, New York which his father built.
Carl graduated high school from Westchester High in Pennsylvania and went on to Penn State in 1954. After a year, Carl decided that he wanted to pursue an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Carl graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1959. Carl served on the USS Macon followed by the commisioning of the USS Long Beach. He then received orders to Cruiser Destroyer Force Atlantic Fleet in Rhode Island. This is where he met and fell in love with his wife of 59 years' Etta Barbara Gallagher. Following that he served as weapons officer on the USS Lawrence. Carl then served on the USS New Jersey during her recommissioning as the main battery officer and served while they were deployed in Vietnam. He was very young for this service and very proud. Later Carl moved to Charleston, South Carolina as the XO of the USS Semmes. Following this, he received orders to command the USS Brooke in San Diego CA. Carl then took time out for some shore duty and headed to the Naval War college in Newport, Rhode Island where he graduated with Masters Degree in International Relations. Feeling the need to influence and guide other midshipmen, Carl then accepted orders to go back to USNA where he was 1st Battalion officer and then as the executive assistant to the Superintendent. Following his time at USNA, Carl went to Gaeta, Italy to serve as XO on the USS Albany which was the sixth fleet flagship. This is where he achieved the rank of Captain. Leaving sea duty Carl received orders to the Pentagon OP NA 32. Carl's final tour at Sea was on the USS Harry E. Yarnell as the commanding officer in Norfolk, Va. Carl then reported back to the Pentagon where he completed his 30 years of service and retired in 1989.
Following retirement, Carl then worked at Techmatics as a program director for 11 years procuring multi- million dollar contracts involving AEGIS Cruise Missiles. He retired back to
Hamilton, New York in 2000.
Carl had a passion for European Cars including the Porsche, Alfa Romeo, and Mercedes. He loved playing basketball and tennis with anyone who had the skill set to match his. Carl was a contributor to the USNA wrestling program sponsoring the team's posters of which many still hang in his garage. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and lived his faith with fervor and devotion. His most beloved hobbies were to tow his grandchildren behind his boat on White Lake in the Adirondacks. He loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events wherever they were.
Carl is survived by his wife, Etta Barbara Albrecht; brother, Robert Albrecht; sister, Mary Franta daughters, Kristen and Joseph Pechacek and Catherine Hanson; his four grandchildren Michael Albrecht, Katie Nowroozi, Matthew Hanson and Samuel Hanson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rita Bernadette Bennett and Robert Henry Albrecht.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 10am, from St. Mary's Catholic Church, 16 Wylie St.,
Hamilton, NY 13346. Interment with military honors in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hamilton, will follow.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 9, 2024 from 6-8pm, at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St.,
Hamilton, NY 13346. The rosary will be recited at 5:45pm.
