Carl Campbell, son of the late John and Rena Campbell, was born on January 3, 1961, in New York City. He peacefully departed this earth on January 15, 2025, in Greenville, NC.
Carl's journey in the arts began early, and his passion for performance and theater was evident throughout his life. A graduate of the High School of Performing Arts and the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, Carl trained in dance and theater management, performing in numerous productions and earning a BS in Theater Management. His education also included studies with the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Dance Theater of Harlem.
Throughout his career, Carl's love for the arts and his commitment to his craft shaped his path. He was actively involved in the Black Theater Alliance from 1975 to 1981, and in 1991, he opened the Greenville Theatre Arts Center, where he served as the Artistic Director. His contributions to the arts community were profound, and he dedicated much of his time and energy to mentoring youth in the community. Carl's advocacy for arts education in North Carolina left an indelible mark, and his influence continues to be felt by the many young artists he inspired.
Carl's extensive experience in production management saw him serve as the Stage/Production Manager for several major touring productions, including those with David Payton Promotions, New Vision Management, Urban World Productions, and American Theater. His impact on the theater world, both locally and nationally, was immeasurable.
In addition to his dedication to the arts, Carl was beloved for his infectious optimism. Despite the challenges he faced in life, his response to "How are you?" was always "Fabulous," embodying his sunny and positive outlook on life.
Carl is survived by his son, Gabriel Loki Campbell, and his siblings: John Campbell (Lynn Campbell), Diane (Tulani) Campbell (Dr. Theodore Muchiteni), Phillip Campbell (Lisa Campbell), Melvin Campbell (Connie Campbell), Joyce Campbell, Joseph Campbell, Robert Campbell (Toni Campbell), Annette Campbell (Late David Payton), Arnold Campbell (Nadine Campbell), and Norman Campbell (Michelle Warren Campbell). He also leaves behind his companion and best friend, Nettie Dixon, along with a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and close friends who were touched by his kindness, creativity, and love for life.
Carl Campbell will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy as a passionate artist, mentor, and friend will continue to inspire generations to come. His spirit lives on through the countless lives he impacted with his work and his love for the arts. May he DANCE IN HEAVEN.
