Dr. Carl F. DeLuca, M.D.
December 18, 1929 - April 26, 2025
Dr. Carl F. DeLuca, a respected pediatrician and longtime Rhode Island medical leader, passed away peacefully at his home in Naples, Florida, on April 26, 2025. He was 95.
Born in Bristol, RI, Dr. DeLuca earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island and his medical degree from the University of Bologna in Italy. He completed his pediatric training at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, and Boston Children's Hospital.
In 1962, he opened Atwood Pediatrics in Johnston-becoming the first pediatrician to practice west of Providence-and went on to co-found the Atwood Medical Center, which grew to become one of New England's largest free-standing medical complexes. He was also instrumental in establishing additional medical centers and emergency care facilities throughout the state.
Dr. DeLuca served as Chief of Pediatrics at St. Joseph's and Our Lady of Fatima Hospitals and held leadership roles in the American Medical Association, the Rhode Island Medical Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Giuseppina DeLuca; his daughter, Dr. Charlene DeLuca; his sons, Carl and Thomas DeLuca; and two grandchildren, Giuliana Storti and Carl R. DeLuca. He will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to children's health, his quiet strength, and his love for family.
Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital via the link embedded below on this page. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Carl, please visit our Tree Store.
