Carl Harbin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Davenport Funeral Home, Inc. - Walhalla/West Union on Mar. 31, 2026.
Master Sergeant Carl Henry Harbin, United States Air Force (Retired), entered into eternal rest on February 5, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a beloved husband, uncle, cousin, and friend whose life was marked by service and dedication.

Carl was born on April 25, 1940, in Seneca, South Carolina, to David and Fredia Harbin. Raised on his family's farm, he came from strong Scotch-Irish and German roots. His early life was shaped by hard work, as his family worked as sharecroppers before the arrival of the local textile mill.

During his time at Seneca High School, Carl distinguished himself as a talented football player, serving as a fullback and contributing greatly to his team's success. After graduating in 1958, he immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he excelled and graduated at the top of his class.

Carl proudly served his country for 22 years, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. His first assignment took him to Castle Air Force Base in California, where he worked on the nation's first B-52 bombers. Throughout his military career, he traveled extensively, with assignments in Vietnam, France, Colorado, Texas, and Thailand. His service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Bronze Star.

While stationed in France, Carl met Nicole Rolande, a local librarian. Their love grew through years of exchanging letters, and they were married in 1970 in Eagle River, Alaska, while he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Nicole preceded him in death.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1980, Carl settled into a life he deeply enjoyed. He spent his days gardening, repairing electronics, reading at the local library, and sharing meaningful conversations with friends at his local coffee shop in Greenville, South Carolina. He stayed very active and cherished visits with his niece and her family.

Carl is survived by his niece, Lisa Landers (Jason), and great-nieces Rachel and Abigail Landers, along with cousins and extended family members, including Deana Wynnkoop, Troy Land, and Opal Gillespie (Charles).

A Graveside Service and Military Honors will be held at Oconee Memorial Park Monday, April 6, 2026 at 11:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 or online at www.support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
