Carl F. Lupp

Carl F. Lupp, age 93 passed away on February 27, 2024 at PA Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home. He was born in Erie, PA on June 6, 1930 to the late Carl and Helen (Grucza) Lupp. He grew up in Erie and attended schools in both the Erie and North East, PA school districts. 

Carl served in the US Navy for four years and achieved the rating of Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM3). He served aboard the USS Coral Sea in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on August 24, 1951. Upon returning from overseas he juggled taking care of his family, working and also managed to get his PMD from Penn State Behrend in 1970 (he attended Gannon University as well). Throughout his lifetime, he continued various areas of education, receiving many specialized certifications.

He worked in the forging industry for 42 years, both in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Carl was an estimator at Kaiser Aluminum Company, where he worked for 15 years and then later held numerous positions and worked his way to being a Plant Manager at Lakeview Forge. He later pursued other interests outside of Erie and consulted for General Aluminum Forging Company in Colorado Springs, CO, Alcoa in Vernon, CA, Reynolds Aluminum in Lebanon, VA and Santa Fe, CA, Delfasco Forge in Grand Prairie, TX and Missouri Forge in Doniphan, MO. Upon returning to Erie, he worked for the County of Erie as a Certified Pennsylvania Evaluator (C.P.E.) in the assessment office and later as a part-time security officer for the Blasco Memorial Library, retiring in September 2014 at the age of 84. 

Carl was very active and was a member of the North East Lodge 399 F&M, the Valley of Erie Scottish Rite, Zem Zem Shrine, Legion of Honor, Cycle Corps, Camel Herders and was a Commander of the Zem Zem Shrine in 2007; and also a member of the West County Shrine and Erie County Shrine Club. Carl was honored to be chosen Shriner of the Year in 2011. Additionally, he was a lifetime member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), North East American Legion Post 105, DAV Chapter 73 and VFW Post 470. He was also a member of the Erie Elks Lodge No. 67, the USS Coral Sea CVA-43 Association, Slovak Club, Erie Maennerchor Club, Seinbenbuerger Club and the N.R.A.

While raising his family, he enjoyed playing ball and was involved with Harborcreek Boys Baseball where he served as President for two years and worked to incorporate the group along with improvements of the baseball fields. He had a special place in his heart for golf and belonged to Lakeview Country Club where he served as President in 1970 and 1971. He was later President of the Lakeview Development Corporation in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Carl always found happiness in time spent with his children and grandchildren. He took special pride in being able to watch his grandson, Shawn, play hockey for the Erie Otters and attended all the games. As Shawn continued his hockey career outside Erie, he continued watching his games on TV. 

He had a special fondness for his dogs, Chad and Charlie and enjoyed walking them daily.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his sister Marquriete Ann “Pat” Fournier and her husband, Jack; his sister-in-law, Linda Lupp and his two stepchildren, Mary Anne Shallop and David J. Shallop.

Carl is survived by his wife, Charlotte Marie Walczak Lupp, whom he married in 1985; his six children, Colleen Yeadon (Bill) of Indianapolis, IN, Denise Szydlowski (Steve) of St. Clair Shores, MI, Karen Johnson, Carl E. Lupp, Gary F. Lupp and Diane Pappas (Steve) all of Erie and his stepdaughter, Jody Donovan (Tim) of Erie. He’s further survived by his brother, Thomas J. Lupp (Linda) of Gallatin, TN, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren.

Carl requested that his body be donated for the advancement of medical science and education. His life will be celebrated at a memorial mass on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church, 421 East 38th St., Erie at 11:00 AM with the Rev. John Malthaner officiating. Military honors will be rendered for Carl by the VFW Post 470 Honor Guard at the Erie Shrine Club following the mass.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children at 1645 West 8th St., Erie, PA as well as St. Luke’s Church (in which Carl was a member since 1999), 421 East 38th St., Erie, PA 16504.

Arrangements for Carl were entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Wintergreen, 2532 Norcross Rd., Erie, PA 16510.

In the future, Carl’s cremains will be laid to rest at Whispering Pines Cremation Garden.
