Carl Shaffer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home on Jan. 13, 2026.
Carl F. Shaffer, "Fred" (as his wife lovingly called him), age 87, a 38-year resident of Naperville, IL, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on October 7, 1938 in Johnstown, PA.
Carl is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Louise; his loving children, Russell (Karen) Shaffer of Moyock, NC, Janet (Bill) McLaughlin of Plainfield, IL, and Caryl (States) Mead of Naperville, IL; his cherished grandchildren, Alexander (Chelsey) Shaffer, Jacob (fiancée Ginny) McLaughlin, Andrew (Marian) Shaffer, Daniel McLaughlin, Alyssa, Carter, and Logan Mead, and great-grandchildren, Grayson and Leo Schultz; as well as his dear sister, Barbara Connor.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Irene Shaffer, and his brother, James Shaffer.
Carl was raised in Johnstown and proudly called it home throughout his early years. He graduated from Johnstown High School before continuing his education at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) and later earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Carl honorably served his country in the United States Army, a commitment he carried with pride throughout his life. One of his most meaningful recent experiences was participating in an Honor Flight, an experience that deeply touched him and affirmed the gratitude felt for his service.
Carl dedicated more than 30 years of his life to a fulfilling career as a mechanical engineer. Outside of work, he found true happiness in the simple pleasures-working with his hands through woodworking, tending to his garden, and enjoying the peace those hobbies brought him. Above all else, Carl's greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, and a proud grandfather who treasured every moment spent with those he loved most.
Carl was known for his generous spirit and his unwavering habit of putting others before himself. He was always thinking of those around him, often reaching out with a card, letter, or text simply to let someone know they were remembered and cared for. These small but meaningful gestures reflected the deep kindness that defined his life.
A faithful servant, Carl found true purpose in giving back to his community and church. He served quietly and consistently, never seeking recognition, and in doing so left a lasting legacy of compassion, humility, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl's name to Honor Flight Chicago. In addition to memorial donations, the family asks that you honor Carl's memory by performing an act of kindness for someone else, just as he so faithfully did throughout his life.
A private inurnment will be held at a future date at Abraham Lincoln Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Naperville, was entrusted with arrangements.

Carl was a good friend, mentor, a life couch, a man of wisdom, with a heart of compassion that was bigger than himself. Carl was a man of the people and for all people; people of all ages and backgrounds. He was at his best when he was helping others or teaching them a new useful skill.
I thought of him as a father/grandfather. From being in the same men´s small group at Community Christian church, to making breakfast for the men´s large group, to working together on many "Hammerheads" volunteering projects, a lot of which was organized by Carl, to sharing time together with the DuPage Woodworkers Club, I couldn´t have asked God for better.
You´re gone from this world good friend, but who you were and all you did for so many will never be forgotten. May I honor you by walking in your footsteps and carrying the torch of compassion forward till we meet again.
God Bless.

Paul, from mens group.

Carl frequently discussed the opportunity to participate in Honor Flight Chicago, encouraging me to sign up repeatedly. After several weeks of his persistent suggestions, I finally decided to register approximately three months later. It was a profound honor to be part of the same trip to Washington, D.C. with him, which I will always cherish.
If you knew Carl, you would understand that he considered many people his friends and was always willing to go out of his way to help them. He greeted everyone with a sincere smile, embodying kindness and genuine warmth.

Very sorry to hear about Carl. I will always remember him and the times spent together on various "Hammerhead" events over many years, where Carl served the Lord by helping the needy with household projects and repairs. Carl always had a solution for virtually every challenge we faced. His mechanical engineering background served him well.
I will also miss seeing him at the front door at church. May God bless your soul, Carl.
