Carla Brown Rhodes, 79, of Sykesville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at home, after a long illness.

She was born on February 21, 1946, in Jackson, MS to the late Dr. Julius Winston Brown and Sarah Elizabeth Roberts Carter Brown. She was the loving wife of William Joseph Rhodes whom she married on June 7, 1969.

Carla was raised in Jackson, MS. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg, SC before transferring to the University of Mississippi where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1968 and a Master of Education in Guidance & Counseling in 1969. She taught elementary school in Oxford, MS and shortly thereafter moved to Maryland where she and her husband had two children, Elizabeth Rhodes Hawley (Dr. Robert Vincent Hawley) and William Brian Rhodes. She taught elementary school for a couple of years in Baltimore County, MD and later worked for the Carroll County Board of Education in Westminster, MD for several years as a home teacher. She and her husband are members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Sykesville, MD.

Surviving in addition to her husband and children are sister Elizabeth Roberts Dear of Bonita Springs, FL, grandchildren: Sarah Elizabeth Winkler (Stephen Garrett Winkler), Lauren Marie Anderson, Blake David Anderson, Camden Charlotte Arnold (Brett Connor Arnold), Claire Elizabeth Hawley, and great grandchild: Moses Sevier Arnold.

She was predeceased by her brother Julius Winston Brown, Jr. who died in 1998.

A celebration of life service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, Mt. Airy, MD on November 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private.
