Carlene Tokoly

Carlene Wells Tokoly, 86, of Burgaw, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born on December 20, 1938, to the late Pearlie Headric and Cassie Viola Woodcock Wells, Carlene was a lifelong resident of Burgaw. She graduated from Burgaw High School in 1957 and maintained close bonds with many of her classmates throughout the years.

Carlene dedicated more than 30 years of service to Pender Memorial Hospital, where she earned the admiration and affection of countless colleagues.

In 1957, Carlene married her husband, James "Jimmy" Tokoly with whom she shared a loving and steadfast marriage of 65 years. Together, they built a loving family, raising four children: Susie Milam, Andy Tokoly (Ellen), Regina Barnhill (Kenny), and Greg Tokoly. Her unwavering commitment to her family was evident in every aspect of her life.

Affectionately known as "MaMa" to her grandchildren, Carlene found immense joy in spending time with her loved ones, whether cheering at sporting events, having sleepovers with her beloved sister, Lila, or enjoying simple moments around the dinner table, where her famous fried chicken was always a highlight. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she cherished each moment shared with them. Carlene had a deep love for gardening and took great pride in her yard, earning recognition as Burgaw's Yard of the Month several times.

Carlene is survived by her sister and best friend, Lila Rackley; sister-in-law, Barbara Harts; seven grandchildren: Jamie Milam (Stefanie), Michael Milam (Christina), Corey Barnhill (Rebekah), Brantley Tokoly (Heidi), Kendi Barnhill Haywood (Clay), Amberly Tokoly Hall (Nolan), and Addison Tokoly (Lauren); 18 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Carlene was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy; sisters: Juanita Wells Herring, Ada Casteen Meeks, Eloise Phelps Brown; brothers: Leonard, Colin, Durant, Marvin, P.H. Wells; and son-in-law, Jim Milam.

Carlene's life was defined by her unwavering love, her deep commitment to family, and her ability to bring joy to those around her. She will be remembered not only for the countless memories she created but also for the lasting impact she had on the lives of all who knew her.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday August 14, 2025 at Harrell's Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Dean Newkirk and Reverend Sherry Coombs will officiate. The family will receive friends before the service at 10:00 AM
