Carnell Hicks Berry, age 87, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away at Sentara Albemarle Hospital on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Born in Camden, NC, on April 15, 1938, to the late Mathias Hubert Berry and Louise Hicks Berry, and was the husband of Janet Norman Berry.
Carnell dedicated his life to hard work and service, both as a longshoreman and a proud veteran of the United States Army. Post retirement, Carnell and Janet ran a successful boarding kennel, Barking Lot, serving the surrounding area for over 25 years. His commitment to duty and his steadfast nature were evident in every endeavor he undertook. A man of faith, Carnell was a devoted attendee of Freedom Baptist Ministries, where he found spiritual guidance and solace throughout his life.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his sons, Carl Berry (Jennifer) and Mike Berry; brother, George Benny Berry (Susie); and grandchildren, Adam Berry (Olivia) and Spencer Berry.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel, with the Reverend Matt Thomas officiating. The family will greet family and friends in the chapel lobby, immediately following the service. Carnell's service will be live streamed on his obituary page at www.TwifordFH.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Freedom Baptist Ministries, 2290 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to Camp Cale (campcale.com/donate), 377 Camp Cale Road, Hertford, NC 27944.
