With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Carol Lucille Buchanan (formerly Scozzafava, nee Martin), age 77. Born on July 19, 1948, in Pu'unene, Maui, HI and raised in Pa'ia, Maui. She was sent to her eternal home on September 9, 2025, at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA, after a series of severe illnesses. She had a profound impact on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Charles Buchanan; three brothers, Ralph Martin, Michael Martin, and William Martin; and nephew, James (Jimmy) Martin.

She was a talented, innovative, creative, nationally recognized, teacher for 42 years, mostly in subjects such as Spanish, French, Italian, Home Economics, and Guitar. She was a tremendous storyteller and loved to share tales of living in the Old Country on Maui.

In her free time, she enjoyed traveling around the world, crafts, cooking, singing, and spending time with family, friends and beloved pets.

She is survived by her daughter, Annette Echevarria Macmillan (Jamie Macmillan); step-daughter Barbara (nee Buchanan) Madsen (John Madsen); step-son Russell Buchanan (Amy Buchanan); 9 grandchildren (Danielle, Matthew, Christopher, Sandra, Steven, Sarah, Michael, Ava, and Alina); 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday September 30, 2025, and Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel. Live stream coverage will be provided for those that can't be in attendance, as well as video afterwards. Inurnment to be held at a later date at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, CA.
