Carol Ruth was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Tom and Elizabeth DeVore, her sisters, Harriett Ann DeVore and Nancy
Elizabeth Higgs (DeVore) and her niece, Adryne Adale Davis (Williams). She is
survived by her children, James (Bo) Lowery, Allison Lowery Wakeley (Don), and
Kathleen (Katie) Stem Tiller (Randy); Grandchildren, Aubrey DeVore (Dev) Wakeley
(Sandy), Kathleen Wakeley (Kasey) Powers (Matt), Anna Whitlock, Sarah Whitlock and
Seth Whitlock; Step Grandchildren Autumn Tiller and Noah Tiller; Great Grandchildren
Jovi Wakeley, Glory Wakeley, and Eva Wakeley. Carol Ruth died peacefully at St.
Vincent's Hospital on July 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Carol Ruth attended Hueytown High School and graduated in 1960. She attended
Auburn University and studied English. At HHS she was a majorette, drum major,
played the drums and was 1 st alternate in the Miss Retrospect Beauty Pageant. She
was very active on the Class Reunion Planning Committee and loved her classmates.
Carol Ruth had been a very active member of the Hueytown United Methodist Church.
She served on many committees and was president of the United Methodist Women on
the Church, District and North Alabama Conference levels. She was also the church
librarian and Children's Loft librarian. She served on the Board of Aid to Inmate
Mothers and worked with the Kairos Prison Ministry. She was a lay minister for the
United Methodist Church. She was on the United Methodist Committee for Relief. She
headed up the Children's Mission Day at Camp Sumatanga in Oneonta. The camp was
one of her favorite places on Earth. She was a board member for the Eva Comer Trust.
She retired from Southern Company Services in 2004.She loved books, Atlanta Braves
baseball, birds, Jekyll Island, animals, traveling,
collecting recipes, progressive policies that help the environment and people in need,
her family and friends.
Her strength and leadership were an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She
will be missed dearly.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10 th at East
Lake United Methodist
Church in Birmingham, AL. Visitation will be from 1pm until 2pm. The service will start
immediately afterwards. Flowers can be sent directly to the church. You can also honor
CR with a donation to one of her favorite charities, the UMCOR Global Ministries
UMCOR - Global Ministries (umcmission.org).
