Carol Bowes Hughes, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5th, 2025, at the age of 91. She was born on September 23rd, 1933 to the late Robert Bowes and the late Annie Dixon Bowes and was married to the late Robert Stanley Hughes. Carol was a cherished resident of South Boston, Virginia, where she touched many lives with her warmth and kindness.

Carol is survived by her devoted son, Donnie Hughes; her loving grandchildren, Shay Hughes and wife Margaret, Caleigh Hughes, and Jake Hughes; and a cherished great-grandchild, Robert Hughes. She was particularly close to her special nieces and nephew, Valerie Hughes, Becky Piso, Ann and Gary Karthauser and valued her lifelong friendships with best friends, Julia Whitt and Vernell Oakes. Carol also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her love and caring nature.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her great-grandchild, Malcolm Hughes, whom she loved dearly and her siblings, Willie Bowes, Lawrence Bowes, Mason Bowes, Herman Bowes, Viola Weary, and Doris Foushee.

Carol was a woman of many passions. She adored her family and found great joy in planting flowers and nurturing her garden. Her faith was central to her life, and she was deeply committed to her Black Walnut Baptist Church community. Carol had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel, always eager to explore new places and make lasting memories. She also had a fondness for shopping, often enjoying hunts for treasures on her outings.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, June 8th, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Reverend Raymond Wooten officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before in the church, starting at 2:00 PM.

Arrangements for Carol Bowes Hughes are being handled by Brooks-Lyon Funeral Home.

Carol will be remembered for her warm spirit, love of life, and unyielding devotion to her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and a lasting impact on all who knew her.
