Carol DeSimone Litts, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, January 26, 2025 after a brief hospital stay at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina.
Born in New York City to William Joseph DeSimone and Maria Vitolo DeSimone, Carol's childhood was spent in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn surrounded by members of her large gregarious Italian American family. After graduating from Eastern District High School in 1961, Carol began her career in the banking industry as an employee of Union Dime Savings Bank in midtown Manhattan. She met her future husband one evening at the dinner table of her department supervisor, who would later become her mother-in-law. Bob and Carol were married on August 1, 1964, and spent the next sixty years navigating the highs and lows of life together. They went on to welcome two daughters in the early years of their marriage, Christina and Debbie, at which time Carol "retired" from the work world for 25 years to devote her time to caring for their growing family. Bob's company transfer brought the family to Greer, South Carolina in 1981. After her daughters were grown, Carol returned to the banking industry, working in the Secondary Mortgage department at BB&T (now Truist) until her retirement in 2009.
As a second-generation Italian American, Carol was fiercely proud of her heritage, her family, and her hometown. She instilled that same pride in her daughters, making sure that the family stories and oral histories, recipes and traditions were passed down as they had been by previous generations. Carol took great joy in watching her grandchildren grow and proudly shared their accomplishments when the opportunity arose. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in their later years, joining tour groups exploring Alaska and Canada, touring the Mid-West and enjoying what Hawaii had to offer.
Carol is survived by her devoted husband, Robert "Bob" Litts; her daughters, Christina Sandefur (Scott) and Deborah Benton (Ed); her four grandchildren, Erin Ray (Brandon), Kasey Benton, Megan Benton, and Spencer Fortune; her sister, Janet Carfagno; and her nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, February 3rd at 12:00 noon at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Taylors, SC. The Rite of Committal will be private.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the clinical staff at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital Downtown for their compassionate care of Carol and her loved ones during her stay. They are especially grateful to the ICU nurses, whose kindness, concern, gentleness and support will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Carol's memory to the Bon Secours St. Francis Foundation.
