Carol Lynn Van Houten

Carol Lynn Van Houten, 69, of Wayne died December 25, 2023.
Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Carol resided in Wayne for most of her life. She was a 1972 graduate of Wayne Valley High School and spent many hours during high school with the band and continued her love of music by helping the marching band for years after graduation. Her life was spent in service to others whether it be as a high school guidance counselor, in ministry or adopting pets, Carol always thought of herself last.
Carol earned her BA in Psychology and M.Ed in Counselor Education/ School Counseling and Guidance Services from William Paterson University and her M.Div in Theology focusing on Pastoral Theology from Drew University. She was a high school guidance counselor for over 25 years, most recently at Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon. Previously, she was employed at DePaul High School and the former Neumann Prep, both in Wayne.
Carol also worked for ten years as a career counselor for adults returning to the work force. In college, she was the coordinator and lead trainer for a telephone crisis intervention service. These experiences led her to develop a wealth of knowledge about personal, career and guidance counseling.
She was also blessed by the companionship of rescued dogs and cats. Her advice was, "Don't shop. Adopt!"
Carol was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Edna (nee Budde) Van Houten.
She is survived by her brother, Paul R. Van Houten of Belmont, CA and several cousins and her most recent rescue and life companion, Mouse.
Visitation will be from 3-6 pm on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Bizub-Parker Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Little Falls. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Totowa United Methodist Church, 105 Church Street, Totowa, NJ. Private Cremation to follow.
