Carole Ruth Contant

Mrs. Carole Ruth Contant, 69, of Oblong, Illinois, passed away at home on Monday, March 10, 2025, with her beloved husband by her side. She was transported to Crawford Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced at 2:37 p.m.
Carole was born on July 27, 1955, in Warren, Ohio, to Walter Francis "Red" Johnson and Maxine Louise (Crawford) Johnson. On February 23, 1980, she married the love of her life, Roy Contant, Jr., in Providence, Rhode Island. Together, they built a beautiful life and shared 45 years of love and devotion. As Roy fondly expressed, "She made me a better person."
Carole pursued vocational training and earned certifications as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Cosmetologist, and Medical Assistant. However, her greatest and most cherished role was that of a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved and cared deeply for her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Oblong, where she found great fulfillment in volunteering, especially during Wednesday night church dinners. Carole enjoyed crocheting, reading-especially her Bible-playing Solitaire and Mahjong on her phone, and caring for animals. While living in California, she earned the nickname "The Dog Lady" for her compassionate care of stray dogs, and she even fed coyotes that grew to trust her.
Carole is survived by her loving husband, Roy Contant, Jr.; her daughters, Nelle Steele of Oblong, Illinois, Maxine Israel of Cabazon, California, Jessica (John) Contant-Thompson of Oblong, Illinois, and Katee Contant of Oblong, Illinois; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Andera (Greg) Smith of Warwick, Rhode Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Jon Israel; and her nephew, Wally Durk.
In accordance with Carole's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the First Christian Church in Oblong, Illinois.
