Caroline Epp, a devoted educator, artist, and advocate, passed away on Tuesday, January 6th, after a courageous battle with non-smoker EGFR lung cancer. She was 51.
Caroline was born on August 15, 1974, in
Evanston, Illinois. From an early age, she showed a deep interest in artistic expression. Encouraged and nurtured by her family, she explored creativity in many forms, finding joy and meaning in art throughout her youth. Some of her fondest memories were of family trips to Cape Cod and the Florida Keys, experiences that sparked her imagination and lifelong love of travel. These early journeys left a lasting impression, later emerging in her art, where the colors and landscapes she encountered in her youth continued to find their way into her creative work.
Caroline graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1992 and went on to pursue an extraordinary academic and artistic path. She earned a BA in Anthropology and a BFA in Photography from the University of Iowa, an MFA in Photography from the Pratt Institute, and an MAT in Art & Design Education from the Rhode Island School of Design. For nearly 20 years, she dedicated herself to teaching at Manchester Essex Regional High School, inspiring countless students through her passion for art and photography, her thoughtful mentorship, and her deep belief in creative expression.
Earlier in her life, Caroline had also worked with greyhound rescue organizations, devoting her time, energy, and voice to advocating for more humane treatment of these gentle dogs. She adopted a retired greyhound named True, who became her cherished companion and a source of joy for many years.
After marrying her husband Steve in 2011, the two of them built a life rooted in curiosity, adventure, and love. Both enthusiastic travelers, they explored much of Europe and the United States together, always finding meaning in new places and shared experiences. They cherished their time spent at their home in
Beverly, Massachusetts, with their two dogs.
Following her diagnosis, Caroline turned her compassion outward toward advocacy, becoming actively involved with the Young Lung Cancer Initiative. Through her work, she helped fellow lung cancer patients navigate their diagnoses and find community, resources, understanding, and hope. Her generosity of spirit and determination to help others remained unwavering.
Caroline is survived by her loving husband, Steven Hunt of
Beverly, Massachusetts; her parents, Helmut and Susanna (Samuels) Epp of
Evanston, Illinois; her sisters; Amanda Samuels and Catherine (Epp) Streiffer; her brother-in-law Robert Streiffer; her aunt and uncle Elizabeth Samuels and Ira Burnim; her uncle Jonathan Samuels; and many other relatives and their families throughout the country. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
