Carolyn Joyce Masterman passed away June 13, 2024, in Olympia, Washington. She was born August 14, 1937, to William Ungrad and Evelyn Cooper Ungrad in Houston, Texas. She was a 48-year resident of Rochester, Washington.
In her youth, Carolyn lived on a ranch with her stepfather, who was a real cowboy. She enjoyed working with the horses and showing them at rodeos. She was a rodeo queen in the mid-1950s.
Carolyn was a Girl Scout troop leader and assistant troop leader (1965-67). Professionally, she worked at St. Martin College (late 1960s), Caregiver at Olympia Manor nursing home (1970s), Weyerhaeuser (mid-'80s – mid-'90s), a fish farm in Rochester (late'70s to '80s) and the Lucky Eagle Casino (2007-2024).
Carolyn loved to make people laugh; she said it made her feel good. She was quoted as saying, "I love to spread the friendliness!" She loved her Lucky Eagle family and felt at home with them; she said they made her feel young. Many people at the casino considered her a surrogate mother and would even call her mom. Her top priority was her birth family; she loved her daughter and grandchildren with a passion and enjoyed spending with them, going on picnics, thrift store shopping, drives in the country, or just eating at her favorite fast food place, McDonalds.
Carolyn loved to take bus trips with her husband, Donald Masterman; camping; participating in the Chehalis Veteran's Museum parades (she was a member of the museum); hummingbird and butterfly watching; ceramics; fishing; antiquing and collecting antiques; and playing the slots.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Caturia of Rochester; grandchildren, Joel and Heather; great-granddaughter, Rebecca. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, grandparents, and brother.
Memorial donations to help cover funeral expenses may be made to Carolyn Masterman, c/o Cindy Caturia, P.O. Box 422, Rochester, WA 98579.
