Carroll Russell Thompson Sr., born March 17, 1940, in Oldham County, Kentucky, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on October 9, 2025. He was 85 years old.
Carroll was the beloved son of Dorthy and Russell Thompson and spent his entire life in Oldham County, growing up alongside his sister, Barbara Sleadd. As a young man, Carroll could often be found working at his father's gas station in Crestwood, always quick with a smile, a joke, or a helping hand.
It was a fateful introduction arranged by his Aunt Hattie that led Carroll to meet the love of his life, Betty Lou Gossett. The two were married on April 18, 1959, and together they built a loving home and family, raising three children: C. Russell "Rusty" (Peg) Thompson Jr., David W. (Melody) Thompson, and Ellen (Troy) Thompson Patterson.
Carroll dedicated many years of his working life to the L&N Railroad and later CSX, retiring after a long and steady career. Outside of work, Carroll and Betty were pillars of Crestwood Christian Church, where they faithfully served on various committees, the Church Board, and often opened their home to host Sunday school classes. Their unwavering faith and servant hearts left a lasting impact on all who knew them.
Family was Carroll's greatest joy. He was a proud father, grandfather to Abby, Shelby, Lauren, Chase, and Nathan, and great-grandfather to six adoring great-grandchildren. He loved nothing more than spending time with them, sharing stories, laughter, and life lessons. Carroll also enjoyed playing dart-ball with his church league, as well as many lighthearted games of corn-hole and golf with friends and family.
He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steadfast faith, and his ever-present kindness. Carroll lived a life of service, humility, and love-truly walking in the footsteps of Christ.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Dorthy and Russell Thompson, his beloved wife of 57 years, Betty Thompson, his son Rusty Thompson, and his daughter Ellen Patterson. He is survived by his sister Barbara Sleadd, his niece Alicia (Darren) Hines, his son David (Melody) Thompson, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and dear friends.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Carroll's legacy of faith, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
