Now here's a story about an old feller by the name of Cary Jackson. First thing y'oughta know about him is that he could spin a tale taller'n a redwood and funnier'n a bare foot in a cowpie. Cary weren't much for formalities or takin himself too seriously, so we'll skip the somber bits, but this here is a tribute to a good doc, and a good man. Kindly remove yer hats, thank ya.
Cary was born in Cambridge, England amid cobblestones and rain-soaked streets. Nary a tumbleweed in sight, but plenty of grumpy men in smart cloaks using big words. Not long after, young Cary and the Jacksons hopped back across the big pond, over a few midwestern farm towns, and landed in the in socially complicated and uncomfortably moist town of Montgomery, Alabama. The eldest of 4 children, Cary took advantage of every opportunity to prank his siblings with ever-increasing frequency and creativity.
Several cuts, scrapes, and scars later, Cary set out to make his way as a doctor. Simultaneously-and some might say more importantly-he met a woman with eyes as bright as the sun and a spirit as fierce as a thunderstorm: Ruth Hanner. Ruth and Cary formed a partnership as solid as a frontier fence post and were married in the sultry heat of August after their graduation from Birmingham-Southern College. Together, they started a family and brought up two byoot-tiful daughters, Elizabeth and Kristin.
With the two young'ins in tow, the Cary Jacksons packed up their teal green suburban and headed west to the wilds of Pocatello, Idaho. Doctor Jackson found his calling both in the hospital, and in the generous landscape. Although it was brand new territory for the Jacksons, Idaho quickly became their beloved home.
No stranger to near-death experiences, Cary led the family on various, and occasionally terrifying, adventures. Communing with the fish, becoming one with the snow, and carving out "short cuts" through the woods; never were his girls at a lack of shit to do nor tears about having to do it. His Cessna airplane, affectionately known as "Victor Victor," was his trusty steed in the sky, carrying him up to the clouds where he truly belonged. Eventually, he gave up sketchy latrines and whatchagot stew for huckleberry pancakes and diner coffee at sunrise.
Yes indeed, life was good for Doctor J.
Cary was more than a doctor; he was the head of the Jackson clan, a figure of wisdom and strength whose absence leaves a void as vast as the prairie sky. We miss him terribly, holding onto the memories of a man who lived life by always looking ahead, and always looking up.
So as the campfire dwindles and the coyotes sing their lonesome song, we bid farewell to Cary Jackson, a true legend in a world that often forgets the greatness found in everyday lives. Ride on, Cary, into the great wide open.
Donations can be made in memory of Cary Jackson to Idaho Rivers United or Maui Strong Fund.
Thank you!

Cary, "Dr J" is a man that I looked up to and admired when I worked with him at PRMC. Even with his passing, the admiration lives on with the example he set and the friend he was. He was kind, compassionate and had a great sense of humor. He was a great doctor that didn't have the attitude that so many doctors carried with them. Regardless of who else was around, when he was talking to you, he made you feel like you were the only one in the room. This was an invaluable trait. He was a friend, mentor, and an extraordinary doctor. C. Bart Casperson

I was working for a Rheumatologists and Dr Jackson called our office to speak to the the doctor I was working for about a mutual patient and when she was not available he was more than happy to just speak with me instead. He never made anyone feel beneath him. A few years later when I was looking for a new job I interviewed with him because of that one encounter and had the privilege of being his MA in his clinic for almost 6 years before he retired. This February my children threw me a surprise birthday party and he came, it was great to see his smiling face. He even gave a little speech at the party about how much he enjoyed working with me. We have lost a great human and this will be felt for many years to come.

I worked at Bannock for 17+?years and had the privilege of working with some of finest clinicians in the state (or anywhere). Toward the end of my tenure I worked closely with the medical staff and was in awe of the talent and expertise of the physicians our Pocatello community was able to recruit. None more so than Cary Jackson, MD. I´m at a loss to describe what made him so special but those who knew him and worked with him know. I also had a special fondness and respect for Ruth. I am so sad thinking of this immeasurable loss. My sincerest condolences to all who knew and loved Cary Jackson. Judy Eaton

The best person I ever worked with. He touched so many lives. His patients will remember his skill and kindness, Those of us who worked with him will remember his work ethic, his brilliant analytical mind, and the way he shared those things with us. He made us ALL better. He was just as special off the job. Kind, generous and funny. There are a million moments and a million memories and I will always hold them close. Fly high, Cary.

Dr.J lives on! He lives on in the memories of all who were his patients and in those who worked with him. I was a lucky one because I have both kinds. All of the sentiments that have been expressed below fit perfectly in descriptions of how and where we knew him. For me, I knew him as an ICU RN @ PRMC in Pocatello for all the years he practiced here. He was sorely missed when he moved to the western side of the state. And both my husband and I reaped the benefits of his medical expertise during his years here. I just want Ruth and his family to know he was well-loved by so many whose lives he touched. And he lives on!

I had the pleasure to work with Dr J in Pocatello. Loved talking about cases and the latest studies. He was so down to earth and had a great sense of humor at times with his progress notes. He will be truly missed.

Dr. Cary Jackson was a wonderful man and physician. He was a kind, warm, empathetic man with an infectious laugh. He enjoyed his life, kept physically active and loved exploring. Many times in his plane.

I worked with him during his time at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center Nampa until his retirement. As a dedicated clinician he actively practiced, supported and introduced evidence based care; elevating the quality and standard of care for our entire hospital, community and health system.

Dr. J never raised his voice or expressed judgement. He had a gentle presence, listening quietly, respectfully to concerns and questions and always answering honestly. Cary Jackson was dedicated and respectful in his work with peers, co-workers, patients, and community. He was committed to making the lives of our patients better and elevating the quality of care to the highest standard.

He was a kind, warm, empathetic man with a beautiful smile and wonderful laugh. He enjoyed his life and family, kept physically active and loved exploring. Many times in his plane.

The last time I saw Dr. J was after he had retired. He returned to help out in the ICU during the Covid epidemic. He looked great, rested and happy. We discussed his retirement, biking, and his new grandchild.

Cary Jackson was a role model and his presence in our lives made a positive impact...he made a difference. I am so sad that he did not have more time on this earth. He would have loved it.

In the summer of 2014, I had abdominal surgery in Caldwell that went south. Nobody quite knew what was causing me to fail. I was in a coma. I've heard there was a lot of shrugging and scratching of heads going on. I was finally moved to the ICU in Caldwell. Cary came to take a peek at me. He kept his plane near my brother's hangar, so he did a favor and checked me out pretty good. 10 minutes later, I was in an ambulance, sirens and lights, headed to Boise to the cardio-thoracic specialist. Within minutes, they knew what was wrong. Cary literally saved my life. I was in hospitals for 4 1/2 months. The greatest day was when I walked into an appointment with him and hugged him, tearfully thanking him for saving my life. The tears were not all mine. He treated me for several years before he retired. He had a knack for making me feel like the most important person in the world. My heart is broken. He was one of the good ones. xo

Dr. Jackson was an amazing doctor! Worked w/ him in ICU and had to hunt him down in my new role! One day he was "hiding" in his little hole with the door slightly open. I knocked on it. When he pulled it back to see who it was he looked up at me, from his seated position, and said, "sorry, I am closed" then preceded to shut the door. I laughed so hard. He opened the door and smiled ear to ear and asked what I needed. He was one of the most intelligent pulmonologist I have ever met! Willing to share his knowledge on a level nurses could understand. He was a gifted educator and physician. YOU WILL BE MISSED! Well wishes and comfort for the family.

Always a treat to hear Cary play his guitar at all our family gatherings.
All the siblings would sing and we had a big time.
We lost Cary way too soon.
Our hearts and many prayers go out to Ruth and his daughters, mom, siblings and so many more.
We love you Cary!
You will remain in our hearts FOREVER!

Doc Jackson was a long time customer(actually his aircraft, N24VV) with my company. We really enjoyed working with him to maintain "Victor Victor". Always patient when we took a bit more time to find an elusive gremlin(s) in the old bird. We were saddened when Doc Jackson decided to sell Victor Victor. Now we are saddened in Cary's passing. Blue Skies, friend! Keep the shiny side up.

When we worked together on West Campus, I Swear the coffee from the Doctors lounge Smelled Awful, like cat pee AWFUL. Doc J made a game out of hiding a cup of "lounge coffee" in the ICU and timing how many Seconds it took for me to Find it. He hid a cup of coffee behind a computer monitor and proceeded into a patients room. I quickly found the source of AWFUL SMELL and dumped it down the sink IMMEDIATELY. I took his cup to our breakroom n poured him a Fresh cup of Good coffee - including cream. Then, I placed it in front of the same monitor. Doc J chuckled as he picked up his cup n took a big swallow. I asked him if I had gotten the right amount of cream in it. He replied, "yes, it actually tastes Really Good" as he took another swallow. I sighed n said, "OH GOOD cuz we were completely OUT of cream, but Diana just finished pumping for her baby n I figured that would make a GOOD coffee creamer." He smiled - took another swallow n said, "You Wouldn´t"
I looked him straight in the eyes, raised my brows n replied, "Wouldn´t I?" He turned around and Dumped his coffee down the sink. I laughed as he walked into our break room to pour another cup of coffee and SAW that we really were out of creamer. I never did admit that I had used up the last of our creamer. We shared ALOT of LAUGHTER throughout the last 20 years. So Many memories that I´ll never forget- I LOVE YOU DOC J!
