Catherine Marion Bruffey, affectionately known as Cathy to her friends and family, passed away peacefully from natural causes on March 14, 2025, in Dover, Delaware. Born in Oregon City, Oregon, on December 29, 1942, Cathy's life was a testament to love, friendship, and thoughtful kindness that touched all who knew her.
Cathy was the beloved daughter of the late Catherine Veronica (Smith) Elledge and Raleigh Burton Elledge. She shared a cherished and lasting bond with her brother Robert Burton Elledge Sr. (Mary). Cathy's journey in love began with her first husband Edward Cantrall, who remained a friend throughout her life. With Ed, she welcomed two wonderful children, Crystal Cantrall and Peter Cantrall (Twila). Her heart found love again with her late husband, Thurman Bruffey, and through this union, she embraced the role of a caring stepmother to Tamera Snow (John) and Scott Bruffey (Toni). The joy of her life was further amplified by the love for her granddaughter, Morgan Snow, and her loyal Shih Tzu, Maggie, who was a constant companion and source of happiness.
Cathy's early years were shaped by her education at Oregon State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. However, her true vocation was found in the heart of her home. As a homemaker and military spouse, she dedicated her life to raising her children and managing a warm and welcoming household. Her support and sacrifices during her family's military service were a testament to her strength and loving nature.
Among her many pastimes, Cathy was an enthusiastic bridge player who cherished the company of her friends around the card table. She was a devoted fan of her beloved Washington sports teams, cheering fervently for the Commanders and Capitals. Her green thumb was evident in the beautiful garden she tended, and she found joy and fulfillment in sewing and various crafts.
Cathy's personality was a beacon of warmth, evidenced by her loving, friendly, and thoughtful nature. She had an uncanny ability to make each person feel valued and heard, and her legacy of kindness will live on in the countless lives she touched.
Cathy's memory will be cherished by her family, including her nieces, nephews, and a host of friends who have become like family through the years. Her spirit, characterized by her generosity and caring nature, will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Cathy's life was a portrait of love and dedication that will be fondly remembered and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide her loved ones, just as her presence once illuminated their lives with joy and compassion.
The absence of her physical presence leaves a void that can never truly be filled, but the memories she created with those she loved will forever be cherished as a treasure beyond measure.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna, DE from 12pm – 3pm.
