Catherine (Valenti) Hummel passed away on Friday evening, December 15, 2023, at her residence in Monroe. She was 84 years old. Mrs. Hummel was born in New Brunswick on January 7, 1939, to Anthony and Irma Valenti. She was raised in New Brunswick and Edison and after marrying her high school sweetheart, Edward Hummel the young couple moved to North Brunswick to raise their family. She remained a resident of North Brunswick for forty-six years prior to moving to Monroe.
After graduating St. Peter's High School and the Drake Business School, Mrs. Hummel had a lengthy career in education. She was employed by the North Brunswick Board of Education for thirty-two years as a teaching aide. Mrs. Hummel traveled extensively and internationally throughout her lifetime and for a short time lived in Switzerland. She was a talented needlepoint artist, a good baker but spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren was her true joy.
Mrs. Hummel was predeceased by her parents Irma (Ruggeri) Russo, Dominic Russo and her father Anthony Valenti. She was also predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Edward J. Hummel Sr. and her beloved and only child Edward J. Hummel Jr.
Catherine is survived by her daughter in law Diane Hummel of Edison, her grandchildren Krystal (Hummel) and her husband Jim Loughlin of Jamesburg and Edward J. Hummel III of Browns mills, her great grandchildren John and Ellie and cousins Judy and Bryan Cauldwell of Monmouth Junction.
Services are under the direction of Selover Funeral Home 555 Georges Road in North Brunswick. Due to renovations, visiting will be held on Thursday December 28, 22023 from 10-11:30 AM at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 and committal services will follow at Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum. Please consider a contribution in Mrs. Hummel's name to the Franklin Township Animal Shelter at 475 DeMott Lane Somerset NJ 08873.
