In memory of Catherine Smith Johnson, we gather today to celebrate the vibrant life of an incredible woman whose legacy of love, faith, and service left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Born in the quaint town of Hilliard, Florida, on July 10, 1930, she graced this world with 94 wonderful years, passing peacefully on February 1, 2025.
Catherine’s life was a testament to quiet strength and resolute faith. As a daughter to Caroline Oxley Smith and Nicolas Smith, she was raised with values that would later frame an exemplary life. After graduating as Salutatorian from Hilliard High School in 1948, Catherine pursued studies at St. John’s Business School in Jacksonville, where she specialized in IBM key punch – a forward-thinking move that set the stage for her early career endeavors.
Her professional journey began at Professional Insurance, though it was her tenure with the Nassau County School Board that truly showcased her talents and commitment. For 32 years as a secretary and bookkeeper, Catherine demonstrated unmatched dedication and precision, becoming both a trusted colleague and a dear friend to many.
But long before she found professional success, Catherine’s heart found a home in faith and family. Since her commitment to the Hilliard First Baptist Church on May 21, 1954, Catherine’s spirit and belief became the bedrock of her existence. She imparted this faith through her involvement in various community organizations, including as a Lifetime Member of the Palmetto Club and as Worthy Matron with the Order of Eastern Star.
Family was Catherine’s greatest pride and joy. She and her beloved William H. Johnson Sr. were married on July 23, 1949 – a union that flourished for 67 years until Bill’s passing. With warmth and wisdom, they nurtured three children: Cathy Conner, Billy Johnson and Annette Hodges. Catherine’s generous spirit and gentle guidance continue to echo in their lives.
Though preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Jeanette Wade and Netha Grooms, and loving husband Bill, Catherine’s legacy and love endure through her family and community. Her passing leaves a profound sense of gratitude for having been blessed to share in her life.
Funeral services to celebrate Catherine’s beautiful life journey will include a visitation on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Shepard Roberson Funeral Home in Folkston, Georgia. Her Funeral Service will take place the following day at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Hilliard, Florida, with interment to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Hilliard.
Catherine’s presence was a gift to all who knew her: a life rich with love, guided by deep-rooted faith, and shared generously with family and community.
