Catherine McLoughlin Obituary
A cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Catherine McLoughlin-Hayes passed away peacefully in her sleep, on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at home in Columbia, Maryland.
Born in Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland, Catherine was the second child of Joseph and Katie McLoughlin. A determined, lively, and bright young woman, she graduated from Munster Institute, and then worked at Athenry Agricultural College, and later as a Poultry Advisor.
Catherine loved to travel, and took every opportunity in her youth to go throughout Europe and the US. She was of strong aspirations, and was always determined to work hard to succeed. In 1972 she came to Washington, DC, expecting to return home to Ireland after a few months. Then she received a scholarship to pursue graduate studies at the University of Maryland, and decided to stay in the US, always with the plan of returning home later. But sometimes life has other plans. She met John Hayes, who would later have the honor of becoming her husband. After her graduate studies, they moved to Philadelphia to pursue her passion in education and biology as a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
In 1977, Catherine moved to the new city of Columbia, MD, where she planted her roots for the next 46 years, raising her three loving children. She switched careers and went on to a successful career in real estate. As a realtor she was loved and respected by her clients and colleagues for her care and expertise. She was very active in Howard County community activities, including the Rotary Club.
Catherine always had a passion for poetry and literature. She was a dedicated long-time board member of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo), and served with distinction as the Irish Evening Chair for nearly 40 years. Catherine brought many of the most renowned Irish writers, including Seamus Heaney, John McGahern, Eavan Boland, Colm Toibin and Frank McCourt, to read at the Annual Irish Evening of Music and Poetry.
Catherine was a fiercely dedicated mother and devoted grandmother. She had many, many friends. She was treasured for her loving, kind nature, her wonderful sense of humor, and her generosity of spirit. Catherine had deep faith and authentic spirituality; she was a long-time parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic parish in Columbia.
Catherine's legacy is lovingly carried on by her family. She is survived by her three adoring children, Siobhán Hayes and her husband Jason Engel, Brendan Hayes, and Caitriona Hayes. She was a proud and doting grandmother to Fiona, Maja, and Adrian Engel; Meabh Bochynski-Hayes; and Ruadhan Bochynski-Hayes. Catherine is also survived by her siblings, Joe McLoughlin and Maura McLoughlin-Lundon, as well as her nieces Dr. Denise Lundon, Michelle Lundon, and Commandant Catherine Lundon, and her nephew Dr. Dara Lundon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo).
Interment is private.

Catherine was the decades-long chair of Hocopolitso's Irish Evening of Poetry and Music. The photo I have provided is of Frank McCord, Carla Dupree , Pam Simonson, and me. I was disappointed when she announced at a board meeting that she was stepping down due to health concerns.

I've known her children since they were toddlers. Sandy and I are saddened by the loss of their mother.

I am so, so sorry to learn about Catherine's passing. I had the wonderful pleasure of working with her when we served on the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo). Such a warm and loving lady. I will treasure my memories of her.

I first met Catherine almost fifty years ago when I was registering my young son for Irish Dancing. She had registered her young son and generously offered to guide me through the process. She managed to convince me that I would also enjoy Irish Dancing. She was right! And, through her dynamic enthusiasm, I embraced the dancing, HoCoPoLitSo, and my Irish Heritage in a new way. She is dancing on another plane now - and we will miss her!

Catherine and I worked together in Athenry, County Galway and we shared many, many happy times. With respect I would like to recall one of our experiences.
In September 1969 we decided to do a 16 day hitch hiking expedition across the UK, onto mainland Europe with the aim of getting to Rome.
We visited many places of interest but Bruges, Heidelberg, Munich Oktoberfest, the Brenner Pass, Innsbruck, Lake Como are still very vivid in my memory.
We arrived in Venice as planned, had intended to journey onto Rome but decided against it. We opted to see more of France and of course spend time in Paris.
Our reasoning was always to be somewhat closer to Ireland should we lose time along the way, and, in those days, we were on a shoestring budget.
However we got back safely and on time.
Many and many a laugh we had as we recounted our experiences and encounters.
Catherine rest with the angels and may the Good Lord keep you forever in His Kingdom.
Forever fondly remembered.
Mary Doherty. (Lee)

Too many funny stories to tell. But we did share lots of fun memorable times. I´ll miss you so much. Catherine was a very traditional great Irish Mother who always put her kids above anybody or anything else. She was one strong Lady, she had a Heart of Gold. She loved Literature and especially Irish Literature and folklore. She did such a great job promoting Irish poets and authors during her life in the US and was on the HoCoPolSo board heading up the Irish section. Many years ago, she came to America on a Post Grad scholarship to University of MD and she stayed. She never lost her love of Ireland either. She worked hard, played hard, she lived life to the fullest, but she never lost sight of the important things like her kid and grandkids. I know she is in a better place now with her Mom and Dad whom she referred to very often. Watch out Big Tom and Larry Cunningham, Catherine has joined you, so I´m sure there will be many sing songs up there. Rest in Peace Catherine. I´ll miss our chats

Catherine and my daughter were best buddies at The Trinity School, they played club soccer together and are friends to this day. Catherine was a Realtor as I still am today. We also shared an office when she joined Long and Foster. Catherine was a wonderful person that truly cared and was passionate about her clients and real estate.
I fondly remember Catherine had Sioban in Irish dancing , which she was most proud of Sioban as well as the other children. Her house was the one to go to on Halloween "pillow cases "of candy!
She was welcoming and loved her children! Her children were her priority then came real estate. Catherine was witty, Kind and generous with helping others. I will miss her but will cherish the 40 years of friendship and memories.
I send my prayers and condolences to her family at this sad time.

I lived in Columbia and worked in real estate with Catherine several years ago. She was interesting, knowledgeable, could be funny, and devoted to her family.
I learned to appreciate her humor, knowledge and friend ship. She will be sadly remembered. I send my sympathy to her children and friends.
