Mrs. Shirley Young Laynor passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025 at the age of 91. Born on November 20, 1933, in Baltimore, MD, to the late Lillian and George Young, Shirley's life was a testament to her unwavering love for her family and friends.
Shirley was the beloved wife of the late William "Bud" Laynor, and together they built a legacy of love and family values that continue to resonate through their children, Jeffrey (Anne) Laynor, Jody (Tim) Latimer, and Jennifer (Mark) Joyner. Her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother was one of her greatest joys, as she cherished every moment with her grandchildren Kelly (Steven) Auslander, Taylor (Devin) Callahan, Katie (Jacob) Laynor, Ashley (Jared) Noble, and great-grandchildren Luke and Logan Callahan, Josie Noble, and Charlotte Auslander.
In her later years, Shirley found companionship and happiness with her "gentleman friend" Jim Frese of Chincoteague, VA. Together, they shared many treasured moments, continuing to embrace life's adventures with grace and laughter.
A graduate of Wicomico High School and Salisbury State Teachers College, Shirley dedicated her early career to educating young minds in the Baltimore County Public Schools. Her passion for teaching was evident in her ability to inspire her students to reach their full potential. After taking time off to raise her children, she returned to her calling, touching more lives as a teacher at St. John's Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Park before her well-deserved retirement.
Shirley's faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a devout Christian, she lived her beliefs through her actions, always extending a helping hand and a warm smile to those around her. Her kindness and thoughtfulness were the hallmarks of her character, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met. Shirley was an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ellicott City, where she served in various volunteer roles and participated in activities throughout the years.
An avid traveler, Shirley's adventurous spirit took her on numerous journeys with her family and friends. She relished in the discovery of new places and the joy of revisiting cherished destinations. At home, she was the heart of social gatherings, engaging in activities that ranged from mall walking to playing bridge, mah-jong, and getting lost in a good book. Her enthusiasm for life was infectious, and she was often the spark that kept her social circles vibrant.
Shirley's zest for life extended to her unwavering support for her children and grandchildren's activities. She was a familiar face at every recital, game, and school event, her pride in her family's achievements evident in her beaming smile and encouraging words.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her generous spirit.
Those wishing to place memorials may do so in Shirley's name with donations to First Evangelical Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 23rd at First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ellicott City. Interment is private at a later date.
