Wayne Cope, a cherished soul known for his kind heart, love of family, and gentle spirit, passed away on August 20, 2025, due to complications from diabetes. Born on July 25, 1944, in Watkins Glen, New York, Wayne brought light and joy into the lives of all who knew him.

Wayne proudly served his country as a Navy veteran-a period of his life that shaped his enduring values of discipline, service, and integrity. After his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Elmira College, nurturing a lifelong commitment to learning, personal growth, and gratitude for the armed forces.

Wayne's professional life began with a long and successful career in chemical sales, where he earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike for his honesty and work ethic. He later discovered his true calling as a vocational rehabilitation specialist, working tirelessly to support individuals with chronic mental illness. His dedication to this work reflected his deep compassion and desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Wayne's passion for baseball was a lifelong joy. A Baltimore Orioles fan, he followed the team faithfully and attended spring training in Florida several times-trips he treasured for the memories made with family and friends. Whether at the ballpark or in his living room, Wayne's favorite part of watching a game was predicting the next pitch or strategy. His deep knowledge and love for the sport made watching with him a true experience. As a youth coach, he passed that same love on to the next generation, teaching not only the game but also the values of teamwork and perseverance.

Above all, Wayne will be remembered for the love he so freely gave to his large family and many friends. His compassion and ability to nurture the best in others left a profound impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of kindness, service, and love will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Maletz Cope; his sons Richie Cope (wife Wendy), John "Ryan" Gregoire-Cope (wife Kimberly), and Alex Gregoire-Cope (wife Meredith); his daughters Lisa Burge (husband Wylie), Kristine Gregoire-Cope, and Erin Allmon (husband Lucas); his stepdaughter Catherine Maletz Lawless (husband David); his stepson Daniel Maletz; nine cherished grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; his sister, Joyce Clark; his brother, Keith Cope; and his former wife, Margaret Bunn.

Wayne was predeceased by his wife, Veronica Gregoire-Cope, and his sister Barbara Dingy.

Donations may be made to Gilchrist Center Howard County (if mailed please include Wayne's name in the Memo line with 'Gilchrist Center of Howard County') or to the Arc of Howard County, in memory of Wayne.
