Catherine (Cathy) Lynne Swofford, 61 of Spartanburg, SC died after a brief hospitalization at Spartanburg Regional Health Care System on August 23, 2023. Ms. Swofford was born in Meridian, MS on December 27, 1961 and was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William R. Swofford of Chesnee, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James W. Swofford of Forest City, NC. She is survived by her brothers, William H. Swofford (Donna) of Chesnee, SC and Brother Anthony Swofford, OSB, Belmont Abbey, Belmont, NC and her sister Deborah S. Greene (Richard) of Spartanburg, SC and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins whom she dearly loved.
Cathy was a 1979 graduate of Chesnee High School and earned a B.A. in Psychology from USC Spartanburg in 1983. After graduation she enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Corpsman at the USN Hospital in Charleston, SC achieving the rank of Petty Officer. She was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1988 but continued to serve in the USNR for another two years. After final separation from the Navy, she moved to West Palm Beach, Florida and worked for the Florida Department of Mental Health for more than 25 years. When her health deteriorated, she took a position at the South Florida National Cemetery where she was able to serve her fellow veterans by ensuring they were laid to rest with the dignity, honor and respect they so richly earned. She loved this phase of her life and felt her service there was her true calling. When she was no longer able to perform this act of love she returned to Spartanburg, SC to be closer to her siblings. Her health continued to decline until her recent hospitalization and subsequent death. Once determined, graveside services will be held at the South Florida National Cemetery where she will rest with those she served. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
