Cathy Lozen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grace Memorial - Smith Chapel - Port Huron on Dec. 7, 2024.
Cathy Anne Lozen (Smith), 77, of Port Huron, passed away on December 5, 2024, following a courageous years-long battle against angiosarcoma.
She was born February 24, 1947, to parents, Ivan and Marquita Smith in Hastings, Michigan. She graduated from Delton Kellogg High School and went on to Alma College where she was a varsity tennis player, drum majorette, played field hockey, and met Timothy J. Lozen who became her college sweetheart.
Upon graduation, Cathy and Tim were married and, although they knew no one there, they moved to Port Huron to accept teaching positions with the Port Huron Area School District because that was the only school system that had two positions open for them. They grew to love the community and stayed to raise their family.
Along with her husband, Tim, she is survived by her children, Megan (Scott) Barnes, Timothy (Megan) Lozen, and Matthew (Elizabeth) Lozen; grandchildren, Kendall Barnes, Keller Lozen, Griffin Lozen, and Harriet (Hattie) Lozen; sister, Debra (Bob) Truax; brother-in-law, John (Michelle) Lozen; and sister-in-law, Christie Looney.
Professionally, Cathy dedicated over 40 years to the Port Huron Schools in many capacities. She served as a teacher, championship winning tennis coach, principal, and in numerous administrative positions ultimately serving as Director of K-12 Curriculum. She was especially proud of her role in developing and implementing the District's "New Teacher Induction Program" to provide counseling and assistance to new teachers.
Cathy was well known as a leader in curriculum development and was an active leader in many educational development organizations, leading workshops and programs throughout the state and nationally. She was a member of the Michigan Reading Association, Middle Cities Education Association, Michigan Association of Math Teachers, and participated in a statewide Department of Education program to provide training and support for women aspiring to become education administrators. Not one to remain idle following retirement, Cathy continued curriculum development work forming Lozen Consulting, LLC to provide consulting services to improve failing schools.
She was a life-long learner. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Alma College, Master's Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University, an Education Specialist Degree from Oakland University, and was in the University of Michigan School of Education Doctoral Program for Education Foundations, Policy, and Administration.
An avid sports enthusiast, she rarely missed a U of M or Detroit Lions game, while actively cheering with her pom poms. Cathy also loved to support her children and grandchildren's activities, travelling to their athletic meets, marching band performances, and robotics competitions. She was an avid golfer, two-time Open Division Robinson tennis champion, and served as President of the Port Huron Golf Club Ladies Association. She was also active in the Port Huron Garden Club, was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, and served as a member of St. Clair County's original Parks Commission.
She was passionate about the people, causes, and organizations she loved. She knew how to get things done efficiently and effectively and did not suffer fools gladly. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, and the organizations she loved.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Grace Memorial - Smith Chapel, 1525 Hancock Street, Port Huron, Michigan 48060. Tim, I do recall you two from Alma. Cathy was a true sweetheart and I knew when you were going to marry her that you had made a great catch. I am glad to see that you two had a strong married life with kids to boot. I hope that Alma was good to you two as it was to me. God speed for this year and beyond. Stay healthy like I try to do. Mike Olson, class of '65. Sorry to hear this.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I used to work for Cathy at the PHASD. I learned a lot from her, and she was a great person to work with. I still tell stories about her office, (I referred to it as "organized chaos"), and how she could quickly find the exact document she was looking for (within an inch or two) in the large pile of documents she was searching through. It was amazing. One of the highlights of my time with her was when she was aligning the K-12 curriculum to the state standards and benchmarks. I was responsible for getting all the books typed up, organized, proofread, and to print. Cathy was very happy with my work and she treated me well. She made me feel important and needed, and that is the sign of a great boss. My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.
