On Wednesday, October 9, 2022, Cecil Howard Zickefoose passed from this life to be with the Lord at age 95.
Howard was born on December 12, 1928, in Akron, OH to Cecil H. Zickefoose and Gladys Gail Garlow Zickefoose. He attended the schools of Upshur County and was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School.
On July 11, 1947, Howard traveled from Buckhannon, WV to catch a bus in Pittsburgh, PA to head for basic training with the U.S. Army in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He served his country for 9 years as a member of the U.S. Army Survey Unit. During his years of service, he was stationed and surveyed throughout the world, including South Korea, North Korea, Guadalcanal, Philippines, Australia, and what is now known as the State of Alaska when it was a Territory. He concluded his experience with the U.S. Army as Sergeant 1st Class. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked in the gas wells for Dean Engineering. His love of the outdoors and his passion for surveying found him accepting a position with the United States Department of Agriculture ~ U.S. Forest Service.
On May 28, 1960, Cecil Howard Zickefoose married the love of his life, Linda Marie Hornbeck in a public ceremony at the Queens United Methodist Church in Upshur County. Howard and Linda resided in Buckhannon until she graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College. After graduating from WVWC, Linda began her professional career as a Church and Community Worker for the United Methodist Church. Howard and Linda moved to Mill Creek and Howard worked at the Elkins Office of the U.S. Forest Service as Survey Party Chief. In addition to his professional career, Howard supported the work that Linda was doing in the Tygart Valley. The first venture of a newly formed ministry known as Tyrand Parish was the birth of a clothing store set up in the home of Howard and Linda Zickefoose. Throughout the years, Tyrand Cooperative Ministries has grown to be a mission for families throughout the Tygart Valley.
Howard served his community and worked to get the EMS Valley Unit established in Mill Creek for residents in the southern part of Randolph County. Anyone who knew Howard soon learned how much he loved the Lord, his family, his church family, his country, his state, and his community. Howard attended the Mt. View Church of the Nazarene and clearly demonstrated to those around him that his faith was the foundation upon how he lived his life. He believed that each day lived should show others the love of Christ through compassion, caring, and love.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil H. Zickefoose and Gladys Gail Garlow Zickefoose, one sister Elaine Mae Zickefoose Davidson Russell, one brother Theodore Zickefoose, his wife Linda Marie Hornbeck Zickefoose, one sister-in-law Dorrie Hornbeck Pastor and nephew Steven Zickefoose.
He is survived by his daughter Stephanie Lynn Zickefoose (Mill Creek, WV); his son Paul Garlow Zickefoose (Mill Creek, WV); one sister-in-law Deborah Hornbeck Boitnott and husband Richard (South Rockwood, MI); two brothers-in-law Christopher Hornbeck and wife Kimberly (Milan, MI); and Raymond Hornbeck (MI); nieces, Pamela Gayle Zickefoose Woody and husband Tim (Buckhannon, WV); Elizabeth Ann Zickefoose Day and husband John (Buckhannon, WV); Jennifer Pastor Pavlik and husband Jeff (Perronville, MI); Amy Boitnott Hutchison and husband Aaron (Rockwood, MI); Stacy Boitnott Moore and husband Keith (Nolensville, TN); Jessica Hornbeck Wood and husband Shane (Key West, FL); nephews Randy Zickefoose and wife Donna (Buckhannon, WV); David Zickefoose and companion Wanda Garris (Castle Hayne, NC); Jason Pastor and wife Melanie (Gibraltar, MI); Matthew Hornbeck (Trenton, MI); Michael Hornbeck and wife Emily (Trenton, MI); and Brent Hornbeck (MI); cousins Sandra Klingler (The Villages, FL) and Robert Miller and wife Nancy (Freeport, OH).
