Charles Corey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J Smith Funeral Home Inc on Jan. 13, 2026.
Charles "Charlie" Corey passed away on January 5, 2026. He was the first-born son of Charles J Corey, Sr and Florinda M (Mello) Corey. Growing up, he was joined by a sister, Catherine, and two younger brothers, Thomas and James.
Death is described biblically as falling asleep and so Charles awaits, in sleep, for the return of our Lord; a time when there will be no more tears and 'former' things like pain and mourning will have passed away. Charlie would tell you of his gratitude to God for the countless blessings he enjoyed throughout his life. Chief among them were the years he spent with the love of his life, Patricia A (Herdzik) Maier (who preceded Charlie in death) and their ever-fluffy puppy Mia.
Born and raised in Newport, RI, Charlie graduated from Rogers High School in 1975, where he distinguished himself as both a dedicated student and athlete, competing as a quarterback in football, a pitcher in baseball, and a javelin thrower in track. He continued his education at Worcester Polytechnic Institute before earning his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Rhode Island.
Charlie began his professional career as a mechanical engineer at McLaughlin Research Company in Middletown, Rhode Island. He later joined IBM Corporation, where he devoted many years of faithful service, applying his skills and expertise with diligence and integrity.
Those who knew Charlie will remember him not only for his professional accomplishments, but for the warmth he brought into every room. He had a gift for laughter and could brighten even the heaviest of days with his humor. His caring nature touched the lives of many, and his kindness was a reflection of a gentle and generous spirit. Charlie lived with compassion for others, always ready to lend a hand or offer encouragement to those in need. He truly had the heart of a servant, always ready to step forward, offer help, and lift others up without hesitation or expectation.
Throughout his life, Charlie approached his work and relationships with steadfastness and commitment. He will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him. He was a devoted uncle to his six nieces and nephews whom he cherished and would do his best to offer guidance and support as they grew up.
Private memorial celebrations of life have been planned for Friday, January 23, 2026, at 1:00 P.M. in Mahopac, New York and on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 1:00 P.M. in Newport, Rhode Island.

Charlie and I worked at IBM on the Engineering and Construction Services team in Real Estate for several years. He was always a friendly voice with a great sense of humor who encouraged me to tackle things outside my zone of comfort. He was always a sincere, passionate, and conscientious professional who devoted his life to IBM. My deepest and heart felt condolences to Charlie“s family.........He will be missed.

Charlie and I worked together at IBM for several years and became good friends. Chaz was always upbeat and was the best officemate anyone could hope for. My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. I know he is at peace with the love of his life Patti and I will miss him dearly.
