Charles M. Darrow, 79 of Hyde Park, NY and formally of Dover Plains passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side and just hours prior to his 80th birthday on Monday September 9, 2024. Born on September 10, 1944, in Yuma, Arizona, he was the son of the late TSGT Charles E. Darrow and Ella Mary Thompson Darrow. Charles was a graduate of Dover High School. He served his Country and was a proud United States Navy Veteran obtaining the Rank of E5 and sailed aboard the USS Proteus a Submarine Tender in Guam from 1963-1965 and completed his service at the U.S. Naval Station in Washington D.C. He received the National Defense Service Medal during his service. On August 24, 1968, in Hudson, NY he married the love of his life Louise E. Larson who survives at home, they recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. Charlie was the co-owner of the Old Corn Crib on Salt Point Turnpike in Poughkeepsie for over 20 years where he met a lot of amazing people. After selling in the early 90's you could find him at Irving Ness Co. with his best friend and soon after at the Lagrange Hannaford/Tops Supermarket in the Meat Department. He retired in 2018. Charles was instrumental in founding the Dutchess Debs Girls Fastpitch Softball Club and was inducted into the Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame in 2010 and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hyde Park where he did a lot of cooking which he always enjoyed. You could find Charlie either at Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds in Hyde Park with his very close friends having a good cup of coffee and reminiscing for hours. He was an avid NY Giants and Yankee fan and enjoyed rooting for his teams, skiing, golfing and going to the horse races in Saratoga Springs. He was most famous for his garden and could hardly wait to jump on the lawnmower and ride around the neighborhood delivering his vegetables. Above all he always enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife he is survived by his children Rena Darrow (Cindy) of Edwardsville, Pa, Lewis Darrow and Vincent Darrow of Hyde Park, NY and Christie Thompson (Mike) of New Paltz, NY; his grandchildren Garrett Charles Thompson and Charlie Lynne Darrow; his brother Frank Darrow (Judy) of Wappingers Falls, NY; many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
