Charles H Day, better known as Charlie to his family and friends, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023. Charlie was born in New Berlin, NY, son of the late Alvah and Helen (Hawkins) Day. He was predeceased by his parents and by his beloved wife Susan Day. Charlie was also predeceased by his sister Elenor Webb, his brother Willard Day, and by his nephew Robert “Bobby” Day.

Charlie was a kind and caring man. He married the love of his life Susan Day on June 28, 1958, and spent the next 57 years loving her until her passing in 2013. Charlie enjoyed traveling the country with Sue, they would often spend their winters in Texas together. His unconditional dedication to Sue was beyond what many have ever seen. Charlie spent many years taking care of Sue through bouts of illness, and dementia.  He truly cherished every moment he was given with her. Charlie was a mechanic by trade and used the vast amount of knowledge he had collected throughout his years helping others. There was nothing he could not diagnose and fix. Even after retirement he was always willing to put his skills to use helping friends and neighbors fix their vehicles. Charlie was also a Veteran of the United States Navy and was very proud of his service to his country. Charlie was a storyteller at heart, anyone who met him quickly took a liking to him. He had a way of captivating people by sharing bits and pieces of his life and experiences. He was always telling his friends and family stories, or sharing memories, anything that might bring a smile to their faces. Charlie also enjoyed sharing his love of NASCAR. On any given Sunday during the NASCAR season Charlie could be found in his chair ready to watch and enjoy the races. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Charlie is survived by his family members Dolores Day, John and Carol Howard, Jerry Howard and Pat Hilliard, Thomas and Rebecca (Stanton) Traub, Marlin and Patricia “Trissy” (Stanton) Coleman, L. William and Lisa Stanton, Gary and Martha (Stanton) Walck and Kraig and Sara (Stanton) Spangler. Although Charlie and Sue never had children of their own, they had no difficulty adding to their family when their neighbor Chris moved to Oxford in 1996. An instant friendship turned into a family. A family which grew over the years that Charlie now leaves behind. Chris, Heather, Kayla, Makenna, Joshua, Leah, Mia, and Lily Karn, John and Stacy Wolf, Stan and Nancy Myers, Norma Braman, and all their families that became his family too. Charlie and Chris truly believed that God brought them together as he knew they would need each other.

Charlie’s family would like to extend the sincerest of thanks to the women who not only took care of Charlie during his time of need but treated him no differently than they would have their own family. Thank you, Kim Gray, Melissa Marte, and Sarah Renaud for the unconditional love and support that you have shown Charlie. It will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charlie’s memory can be made to the Hospice of Chenango County, 33-39 Court Street, Norwich, NY 13815 or to Foundation Church of Oxford, 3505 Vestal Parkway East, Vestal, NY 13850. But perhaps the greatest contribution in Charlie’s memory can be made by continuing to live by the core values that Charlie himself lived by. Always be kind and help others, and always take time to think before solving a problem.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc. 21 Main Street, Oxford, NY. A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be announced in Spring 2024. Friends and family may share memories and condolences by visiting www.behefuneralhome.com.
