Charlie was born on September 22, 1955 to Charles and Evelyn Turnage Elam of Covington.
Charlie graduated from Covington High School in 1973. He loved fishing and was always joking around. He was quite the character, but if he told you he was serious, he wasn't kidding. He was always devoted to his family and would always be available to help anyone that needed help. He was so proud of his children and grandkids. He was as big a kid as they were. He loved the old time gospel songs and singing with friends and sang in the choir at Clopton United Methodist Church.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Evelyn Elam. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Deen Hanks Elam; a daughter, Jennifer (Stephen) Winters; a step-son who he loved like a son and always told everyone he was his son, Nick (Caitlin) Hanks; three grandsons, Brandon (Bree) Hanks, William Hanks and Aiden German; one sister, Lina Shankle and two nephews, Blake Shankle and Matt Shankle.
Charlie will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at the Clopton United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16 with burial to follow in Clopton Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. on Tuesday and until service time at 1 p.m. at the church.
