Funeral services for Mr. Charles Gortney, age 81, of Ashland, will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland with Rev. Noel Vickers officiating. Burial will follow in the Lystra Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Gortney passed away November, 30, 2025 at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, and had worked in the logging industry for many years. Charles enjoyed going dancing with his wife, Juanita, of 58 years, tractors and farming, watching Alabama football and NASCAR. He loved being under the hood of anything, drag raced as a young man and riding dirt roads later on.
He is survived by his sister; Sherry Cotney (Jimmy) of Wadley; sister-in-law, Debra Jordan (Pete) of Lineville, two brothers-in-law; Paul Mayo "Sparkplug" (Regina) and Jimmy Mayo (Shirley Harris) all of Ashland; special caregiver, Dee Carr and several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Lois and Margie Gortney; wife, Juanita Gortney; siblings, "Sonny" Gortney, Jean Gortney, Bobby Joe Gortney, Willis Gortney and an infant brother Paul Gortney; brother-in-law, Ray Mayo; and sister-in-law, Helen Oates.
Active pallbearers will be Billy Carr, Tim McCain, Richard Gortney, Greg Denney, Doug Gortney and Mark Cotney.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Wednesday.
