Charles F. Hartley, Jr. of West Roxbury passed away on January 8, 2025. Beloved son of the late Charles F. Hartley, Sr. and Mary E. (Wilson). Loving father of Sarah M. Hartley and Robert J. Hartley. Dear brother of Jane Carew of Woburn, Elynor Harrington of West Roxbury, and the late Barbara Hartley-Seltzer, Ann. F. Hartley, and Sgt. Robert Joseph Hartley U.S.A. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Charles worked as a traffic line painter, lending over 50 years of enthusiasm, expertise and precision to every parking lot or athletic field he painted.
He was a graduate of Chauncey Hall. He loved West Roxbury and the neighborhood he grew up in. He caddied at the country club, where he developed his love for golf. He also coached little league baseball and was an avid bowler.
For many years, Charles opened his home to countless international students, creating many lifelong friendships.
In 1997, Charles embarked on a spiritual journey that he diligently pursued and nurtured throughout the rest of his life. Charles valued his spirituality and shared his message with every person he encountered.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, January 21st at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, at 11:00am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.

I grew up with Chuck on Perham St. Chuck was one of a kind. We were good friends growing up. We played pool together, we played cards together and, of course, galavanted around town together. Later on in life we reconnected and, like we did when we were younger, we went bowling frequently. I haven´t seen Chuck for a few years and just heard of his passing. I will always remember him for his unique character, his humor and his joy for life.

My dear friend! I so love this picture of Chuck from our bowling days. He was having a particularly trying string. He said it was like he had never bowled before! We had a good laugh at that one.

Chuck was a true inspiration for so many of us who knew him as he dealt with life´s ups and downs with courage and grace. I have in my memory conversations with him that remind me to be thankful every day for just another day on this planet... and to make the best of it. RIP, Chuck.

Jim and I enjoyed and so appreciated talking to and spending time with Chuck. He had such great stories about his work, the international students who stayed with him, and his early wild days. I often stopped by to catch up with him as I walked the dogs around the neighborhood. It was with great sadness we heard of his death. A beautiful light and being has been removed from our day2day lives.

We can't make the graveside funeral on Tuesday but our spirits and heart felt love are with his family.

There are too many memories to mention! I am so grateful that I had an opportunity to know Chuck and be a witness to his spiritual journey. We started with The Big Book, then Conversations with God and ultimately, A Course in Miracles. This was the foundation of our deep friendship. Chuck showed me how to be still and quiet and listen and always shared examples of how he "listened to the Stillness". I take so much comfort in knowing that he is with back in Love. Back in the Stillness.
