Charles Theodore (Chuck) Haseman

Chuck Haseman was born in Newport, Oregon to Richard Cecil Haseman
Jr., and Alona Fay Haseman (nee Daly) and spent his early years there
living in a logging camp. When he was nine years old, the family's logging
business was sold and the family settled in Longview, Washington.
As a youth, his hard work and drive to achieve was apparent, when at
sixteen he became a manager of the Longview McDonald's. Later, he
proudly served as senior class president at Mark Morris High school while
on the football team and in the marching band. After graduating, he
attended Pacific Lutheran University where he majored in business and
marketing. He also sang in the Choir of the West, touring with them around
the country.
After college, he worked in a Zale store in Tacoma, Washington. In 1980, a
Zale executive from Dallas visited the Tacoma store and was so impressed
with Chuck's positive outlook on life, his business knowledge and people
skills, that he hired him on the spot for a position at Zale Corporation in
Dallas, Texas. Chuck worked at Zale for many years continuing to learn
the ins and outs of retail.
He had such high standards when it came to customer service that he would
pull aside a retail employee who was performing poorly and "suggest"
better ways to treat customers. He referred to those times as "teachable
moments."
After moving to Dallas, he joined King of Glory Lutheran Church where
he was the Boy Scout troop leader, Sunday School teacher and mentor to
confirmation students. It was there, in 1981, he met his future wife, Barbara
and her daughter, Carrie. On October 9, 1981, Chuck and Barbara married,
and spent the next 43 years together.
He loved all music from classical to rock, especially the band Queen, and
he enjoyed attending the Dallas Symphony concert with his family. He was
also an avid sports fan and loved attending the Stars hockey games and
watching college and professional football.
He belonged to the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life, and held
many positions within that organization. He enjoyed influencing young
scouts in a positive way, by instilling in them the importance of helping
others and serving their communities. As an adult Scout, he received many
awards and promotions for his hard work, self-sacrifice and years of
service.
In 2018, he joined the University of Texas at Dallas as an adjunct
professor. His years of experience in retail business and marketing helped
him develop the knowledge necessary to teach at the college level and by
2021, he was promoted to Professor of Practice. In addition to teaching, he
was instrumental in launching the Center for Retail Innovation and Strategy
Excellence (RISE) and serving as its director.
His students loved his classes. He made retail, management, and marketing
entertaining and useful. Chuck possessed a sense of humor, which endeared
him to his students and colleagues alike. Teaching turned out to be his true
calling and brought him great joy!
He was preceded in death by his mother Alona (Lonny) and father Richard
(Dick), and a niece, Jill Alvord. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara
Haseman, his daughter, Carrie Weir, his sister Sally Dullum (Tacoma,
WA), his brother Scott Haseman and wife Katarina (Carlton, Oregon), and
many nieces and nephews.
He was a fun-loving guy who embraced life fully, and was able to thrive in
almost any environment. His legacy of love, kindness and willingness to
help others, will serve as an inspiration to many, and he will be deeply
missed by those who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at
11:00 a.m. at King of Glory Lutheran Church (6411 LBJ Freeway, Dallas,
TX 75240).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chuck's honor to either: The
RISE Center at the University of Texas at Dallas or The Boy Scouts of
America.
